Imado yaki 今戸焼 Imado ware
quote
Imado jinja
is a Japanese shrine located in Imado where north part of Tokyo Asakusa. It is one of the Shichifukujin (七福神) Shines of Asakusa, and enshrined Fukurokuju (福禄寿). The history of the shrine begins at 1063 by Yoshitomo Minamoto and Yoshiie Minamoto.
It is very famous for the birth place of fortune cat (招き猫, manekineko), and last place of Soji Okita (沖田総司), the greatest samurai warrior of Shinsengumi (新撰組). Now, it is well known as good luck shrine for love and marriage.
There are many good luck items for love and marriage with fortune cat.

Imado Ware (Imado Yaki)
Imado ware made in what is now called Imado in Taito city, was one of the most popular type of earthernware fo vessels and figures during the Edo period. The Pedestals of the guardian dogs at the Imado Shrine, carry the names of Imado potters and the date of 1752 when these figures were presented.

Imado ware was said to have originated at the beginning of the Edo period, however it was not until the endo of the 18th Century that it was given the name of Imado ware. As a result, it can be presumed that Imado ware was already being produced full scale during the first half of the 18th Century. THe production of old fashioned roof tiles flourished along the banks of Sumida River. This production of Imado ware was depicted in "Edo Meisyo Zue" and in "Sumidagawa Choryu Zukan" currently being held at The British Museum.

In recent years, excavations at the ruins of Edo have uncovered earthenware vessels and dolls carrying names of potters of Imado ware and also roof tiles with the impressed seal of Imado.
The Great Kanto Earthquake and WWII Tokyo air raids forced almost all potters to move out of Taito city, leaving only one family, which still produces earthenware dolls of traditional figures. These include "maneki neko" know as fortune cats and "Kuchi ire kitsune" know as good life foxes.

Last place of Soji Okita
This shrine is also known as the last place of Soji Okita who is one of the most popular and strongest Sumurai in the Edo period. He was the team leader of 1st party of Shinsengumi. When he was suffering from tuberculosis, he was curing at this temple. However, he died because of that. It was great irony that the greatest samurai who never lost by sword fighting could never get over with his disease.

Fukurokuju is the one of the enshrined god in this shrine. Fukurokuju is one of the Seven Lucky God in Japan. When you are in Asakusa, visit all Seven shrines and temple where enshrined each gods. This god brings you the happiness and long life.

Enshrined God:
Emperor Ojin, Izanaginomikoto, Izanaminomikoto and Fukurokuju.
Pray for: Good luck for love and marriage (enmusubi).

Ebisu

- quote
Ebisu (恵比寿) is major district of Shibuya-ku in Tokyo, Japan.
It was developed on the site of a former brewery and is now home to Yebisu Garden Place.
It has a high concentration of bars and restaurants.
- - - History Ebisu was founded around 1928 as a community developed around the Japan Beer Brewery Company
(now Sapporo Breweries Limited) facilities which began brewing Yebisu Beer in 1890.
After the breweries were moved to Chiba in 1988,
the area underwent a major urban development resulting in the construction of Yebisu Garden Place,
which opened to the public in 1994.
Following the construction of Yebisu Garden Place in 1994, the area around Ebisu Station developed rapidly.
The district and railway station of Ebisu takes its name from the Yebisu Beer brand,
which in turn was named after Ebisu (one of the Japanese Seven Gods of Fortune).
The spelling "Yebisu" is intentionally archaic.
With or without the "y" the pronunciation is the same as "Ebisu".
- - - Food and drink
Ebisu has a high concentration of restaurants, cafés, izakaya, ramen shops, bars and old-fashioned tachinomi ("stand and drink") bars.
- - - Yebisu Garden Place
Yebisu Garden Place is a shopping and cultural center located in Ebisu.
It has a sloped promenade leading to a large central plaza covered by a wide glass arch. The area regularly hosts events and markets on weekends.
The complex contains the following attractions:
Sapporo Breweries headquarters;
Museum of Yebisu Beer;
Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography;
Château Restaurant Joël Robuchon, a replica of a Louis XVI French château which houses three Michelin-starred restaurants (L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon - 2 stars, La Table de Joël Robuchon - 2 stars, and Le Chateau de Joël Robuchon - 3 stars);
Yebisu Garden Place Tower, a skyscraper with "sky dining" restaurants on the top 38th and 39th floors with panoramic views over Tokyo;
Atre shopping arcade;
Glass Square, a self-enclosed shopping centre; and
Mitsukoshi department store.
Yebisu Garden Place also offers annual winter illumination.
It is one of the most popular winter illumination events in Tokyo which has been held for over 20 years. It contains over 100,000 LED lights and a Baccarat crystal chandelier that is 5m large x 3m wide "It’s the world biggest Baccarat chandelier created with 8,472 pieces of crystal parts and 250 lights by 70 skilled craftsmen."
This is one of the most romantic attractions and it is perfect for couples usually from November 3 to December 25.

- quote -
The area of Inagi has been settled since the Japanese Paleolithic, or for over 20,000 years, based on projectile points, stone tools and microliths found in several locations within city borders.
There is evidence of several Jomon period settlements, but settlement disappeared towards the end of the Jomon period due to climate change and eruptions of Mount Fuji. The area was sparely settled in the Yayoi period, with increasing settlement density in the Kofun period.
A number of Nara period remains have been found, including the ruins of a roof tile kiln.
During the Heian period, the area became part of a shōen controlled by the Oyamada clan, and later by their cadet branch, the Inabe clan into the Kamakura period, and was an area contested between competing branches of the Ashikaga clan and Uesugi clan in the Muromachi and Sengoku periods.
After the start of the Edo period, the area was tenryō controlled directly by the Tokugawa shogunate.
Inagi as a municipality was founded on April 1, 1889 as a village in what was then Minami-Tama District, Kanagawa Prefecture, from the merger of 6 pre-Meiji period hamlets with the establishment of the modern municipalities system. The district was transferred to the administrative control of Tokyo Metropolis on April 1, 1893.
On April 1, 1957, Inagi Village was promoted to town status, and to city status on November 1, 1971.

- reference source : jinja.tokyolovers.jp/tokyo/hachiouji ... -

Mejiro 目白 the Mejiro district

- quote -
The district's name is after Mejiro Fudō, which is one of the Goshiki Fudō.
Mejiro is home to the prestigious Gakushuin University.
The university's predecessor was established in 1877 to educate the children of the nobility.
Its notable alumni include most members of the present Imperial House of Japan
as well as the 59th Prime Minister of Japan Tarō Asō.

Fudo with white eyes . .
Shinchokokuji (Shin-Hasedera) in Toshima has a statue of Fudo Myo-O, made by Kobo Daishi himself.
When Kobo Daishi was in 荷沢河 Hezawa, 大日如来 Dainichi Nyorai appeared to him and then changed into Fudo Myo-O.
The Deity wielded its own sword and cut off its left arm at the ellbow.
A lot of smoke and flames came out of this burning wound.
Kobo Daishi made the statue just as he had seen this.

Mejiro - A Historic and Quiet Town
- - - - - Townscape and Security
Mejiro is known as one of the most prestigious residential areas on the JR Yamanote Line.
There are a number of academic institutions such as the Gakushuin University in this small hilly area.
Mejiro Bunka Mura, a residential district developed by the Seibu Group is located on the west of JR Mejiro Station, while Tokugawa Village is located on the east, on the site of the former Owari Tokugawa family’s residence.
Both of the districts have quiet neighborhoods. Streets around the station are lined with banks, shops, and restaurants, but there is no entertainment district, thus ensuring that Mejiro is a safe place to live.
- - - - - Mejiro - The Town of History and Academics
The name, Mejiro, comes from the Mejiro Fudo Temple which is one of the Five Color Edo Fudo Temples (Goshiki Fudo).
In the Edo Period (1603-1868), the residences of daimyo (feudal loads) and hatamoto (direct retainer of the shogun) were built on Mejiro Hill.
Since then, the area has historically been home to government officials. The area around the hill is also a high-class residential district where many prestigious houses have been built on the ruins of former nobilities’ residences.
Mejiro has been known as a town of academics since the Gakushuin University was established as an educational facility for members of the Imperial family and members of the nobility in the Meiji Period (1868-1912).

Mejiro - White Eyes
- - - The Famous White Horse Theory
This theory says, without stating much else, that a famous white horse was born here, a 白い名馬 shiroi meiba, if you will. This theory is plausible because, well… ok, anything’s possible. But naming a place after a single white horse seems a little silly. Anyways, the etymological basis for this derivation is that the original place name was 馬白 Mejiro “white horse” – 馬 representing a dialectal variant of ma (horse), me.
- - - The “Tokugawa Iemitsu Did It” Theory
Having researched a ton of Tōkyō place names this year, I’m starting to see patterns emerge that set off my BS detectors. Theories that say the third shōgun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, came into some place and renamed it are a dime a dozen.
The story states that one day Tokugawa Iemitsu came to Meguro for falconry and thought the name 目黒 Black Eyes was inauspicious and ordered the area to be called 目白 White Eyes. The stupidest thing about this theory is that anyone who looks at a map will see that the modern Meguro and Mejiro are nowhere near each other. And while – yes, anything is possible – there could have been another village called Meguro here at one point, it’s pretty unlikely. Even if it was true, why didn’t Iemitsu care about the other Meguro? And he was the shōgun for fuck’s sake – the samurai dictator of the realm. I doubt he was such a pussy as to change the names of villages simply because the name scared him.
- - - The “Buddha Did It” Theory
At the beginning of the Edo Period, the super monk, 天海 Tenkai, was placed in charge of developing Buddhist temples in the area. His pet project was to build a cluster of 5 temples dedicated to Acala, called 不動 Fudō The Unmovable One in Japanese.
Each temple’s statue of Fudō had a different colored pair of eyes. The one in 目黒 Meguro Black Eyes had black eyes. The statue in 目白 Mejiro White Eyes had white eyes. The presence of a temple established by Tenkai, which was part of a grouping of 4 other temples was prestigious for the area and probably brought many pilgrims to the town’s 門前町 monzen-chō (town built at the front of a temple). The area then derived its name from this temple’s claim to fame, the white eyed statue.
This theory sounds plausible on the surface, but the fact is that the name Mejiro pre-dates the Edo Era, so sorry to say, the statue’s eye color might originate from the place name, but the place name does not originate from the statue. The name Mejiro allegedly first appeared in one of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s original surveys of Edo when he moved into the area and was sizing up his new holdings.
- - - Tokugawa
in 1932, the head of the 尾張徳川家 Owari Tokugawa-ke Owari branch of the Tokugawa Family built a residence here. Since then, his property has been turned into an exclusive planned community called the Tokugawa Village. It’s home to high ranking diplomats and über-rich douche bags of every stripe and it’s home to the 徳川黎明会 Tokugawa Reimeikai Tokugawa Dawn Society which sounds like an evil cult, but on the surface it seems to be a group dedicated to historical research related to the Tokugawa. It’s affiliated with the prestigious Tokugawa Bijutsukan Tokugawa Fine Art Museum in Nagoya which preserves the largest collection of art and property of the Tokugawa family and has a hell of a gift shop if you want goods with the Tokugawa family crest printed on them.

Mejiro-shita Ōarai-no-seki 目白下大洗堰 the weir at Mejiro-shita
Ōarai-no-seki was an important facility to supply water in the Kanda aqueduct
which used 井の頭池 Inokashira-Ike pond as a water source to all around the city of Edo.
Water drawn from Inokashira-Ike pond, Zenpukuji-Ike pond, etc. was divided into two courses at this dam.
water was first sent to the residence of Mito Tokugawa household
and then distributed to all of Edo through the underground.
The remaining water was discharged into the Edo River.
The facility was built during the governance of the 3rd Shogun Iemitsu.
