Hatchoobori, Hatchōbori 八丁堀 Hatchobori moat
中央区, Chuo ward, 八丁堀一丁目 ー八丁堀四丁目 from the first to the fourth sub-district
former 旧京橋区 Kyobashi ward. / Hachobori / Hacchōbori / Hacchobori

lit. moat of 872 m length. canal of 8 cho
Location of the police barracks in Edo.

八丁堀川(桜川) River Hatchoborigawa (Sakuragawa)

The original spelling was
八町堀 canal of 8 cho (one cho was about 109 meters).
丁 is a simplified later version of 町.
A lot of the canal was filled in around 1955.

Around 1635, many temples of this area moved to Asakusa. Their land was used for the police barracks.
Since the public baths in Edo became quite popular and always crowded, the police constables were allowed to use the baths for women at any time.

This area of the town was known for its stonemasons, because the stones could be transported by ship on the canal. Even in these harsh surroundings, some chrysanthemums had made their way to flowering.
