- History
The area around Noheji was inhabited by the Emishi people until the historical period, and the name “Noheji” is derived from “Nosobechi”, or “place where a pure river flows through a field” in the Ainu language.
During the Edo period, the area was controlled by the Nambu clan of Morioka Domain and prospered due to its fishing industry and location on the road connecting Morioka Domain with the Hirosaki Domain.
During the Boshin War of the Meiji Restoration, the Battle of Noheji occurred between the Tokugawa loyalist forces of Morioka Domain and pro-imperial forces of Hirosaki Domain on 11 November 1868, resulting in a victory for the Imperial faction.
During the post-Meiji restoration creation of the modern municipalities system on 1 April 1889, the village of Noheiji was established. Noheji was elevated to town status on 28 August 1898.

Tanabu Festival
In the northern wilds of Aomori, a land of long winters and cold snowy nights, summer is held in divine regard. This can be vividly experienced during the three nights of the Tanabu Festival in the town of Mutsu. If you were to ask any local what one event their region is known for, what one event everyone is looking forward to, what one event is the last great hoorah before winter's onslaught, it is this very one.
The festival spans three days, the first evening beginning with the "oshimako" dance. Men lead the procession carrying lanterns, followed in their wake by hundreds of women in traditional dress dancing the "oshimako" to centuries old music.
The second night is the "mikoshi" night where several teams of men drink their body weight in beer, lay hold of a portable Shinto shrine (the mikoshi), and start chucking it into the air while yelling to lung's capacity and spinning wildly. This author has participated in the "mikoshi" and can verify that hurling hundreds of pounds into the air, and entrusting the catch to a drunken cohort, is a great way pass the time. The "mikoshi" is used to transport the shrine's diety around the festival, while throwing him into the air is for his amusement. At least a thousand or so onlookers fill the streets, many dressed in traditional yukata, Each of the four separate neighborhoods of the aptly named "Tanabu" district in the town of Mutsu house their own portable shrines called "dashi" all year long, bringing them out to play for the festival. Each shrine is housed in a 15 ft tall structure resembling a mini-castle that is pulled along atop a wagon, with the image of the god on the top floor of the shrine. Each of the four wheels are wooden and probably decades old, having no axle so that a gang of men have to manhandle the "dashi" with ropes and poles to make it turn. Several people hang out in the shrines, playing flutes and drums. The shrines are pulled through the streets to the raucous shouts of "yama yare!", to my best knowledge meaning "get it done!".
On the last night of the festival,
the five shrines meet at an intersection for "gosho wakare", the ritual where they separate and return to their respective neighborhoods until next year. During this ritual, at around 10 PM, a giant barrel of sake is brought and men in priestly garb ladle sake out to all present until its empty.
The festival has a few side attractions as well: food booths, "noh" plays and samurai dramas acted out on a stage, local bars and restaurants set up booths on the streets and offer cheap fares to entice customers. During the day one can see small groups of men carrying around their "mikoshi" and playing traditional music in the backstreets. Perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of the festival is the people. Being the land of long winters, this summer festival brings everyone out of their homes and brings out joy in everyone present. If you are looking to interact with local people, this is the best time of year to do so.
The origins of the festival are unknown
but have been estimated to be over 300 years old. It resembles the Gion Festival in Kyoto in many ways. Each shrine houses a neighborhood deity. In the weeks leading up to the festival, the teams who pull the shrine will regularly meet, set the deity's statue in a place of honor, and get thoroughly drunk.
The name "Tanabu" relates to the town of Tanabu that existed before it was merged with another town called "Ominato", becoming what is the current town of Mutsu.

- History
Shimoda has been settled since prehistoric times, with numerous Jōmon period remains found within city limits. It is mentioned in Nara period documents as the location to which Prince Ōtsu was exiled in 686 after his failed rebellion, and in Heian period documents in reference to its iron ore deposits.
During the Sengoku period it was controlled by the Odawara Hōjō clan, who built a castle (later destroyed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi).
Under the Tokugawa shogunate, Shimoda was tenryō territory directly administered by the shōgun. During the Edo period, Shimoda prospered as a seaport, and was a major port of call for coastal vessels travelling between Osaka and Edo.
Until 1721, as a security measure, all vessels were obligated to call at Shimoda before proceeding on to Edo.

Saku (佐久市, Saku-shi)
- History
Saku is located in former Shinano Province, and by the Sengoku period it was home to the Ochiai clan, a samurai family that sided with Uesugi Kenshin during his conflict with Takeda Shingen in the 1550s. The Ochiai clan consequently fought for the Uesugi during the Siege of Katsurayama in March 1557; all Ochiai members who took part in the battle were killed in combat or committed suicide.
During the Edo period the area of Saku developed as the castle town of Tatsuoka Domain under the Tokugawa shogunate and as a post town.
Following the post-Meiji restoration cadastral reforms, the area was organised into Saku District, with the town of Asama, and the village of Higashi (from Kitasaku District) merging with the towns of Nozawa and Nakagomi (both from Minamisaku District) to create the city of Saku. On April 1, 2005 Saku absorbed the town of Usuda (from Minamisaku District), the town of Mochizuki, and the village of Asashina (both from Kitasaku District).

Komoro Domain
- History
The area of present-day Komoro was part of ancient Shinano Province.
The Tōsandō, one of the national routes passed Komoro, which was the location of an Umaya, or post station for government officials and army.
However, the name "Komoro" first appears in written history in the Kamakura period chronicle, Azuma Kagami. In these days, Komoro Tarō Mitsukane (小諸太郎光兼), a gokenin assigned by the shogunate to govern the area.
During the Muromachi period, the region came under the control of the Ogasawara Ōi clan. The area had a very unsettled history during the Sengoku period.
Under the Edo period Tokugawa shogunate, much of the area was under the control of Komoro Domain and the town developed into a jōkamachi around Komoro Castle.
- - -
The area which later became Komoro Han 小諸藩 Komoro Domain was repeated contested between the Uesugi clan, the Takeda clan and the Later Hōjō clan during the Sengoku period, changing hands repeatedly. After Toyotomi Hideyoshi annihilated the Hōjō clan in the Siege of Odawara in 1590, he awarded Komoro as a 50,000 koku holding to 仙石秀久 Sengoku Hidehisa. The marked the start of Komoro Domain. He was confirmed in his status by Tokugawa Ieyasu after the Battle of Sekigahara, and his son, Sengoku Tadamasa was transferred to Ueda Domain in 1622.
Komoro was part of the holdings of Kōfu Domain from 1622-1624,
but was revived as an independent domain for Matsudaira Norinaga from 1624-1647. On his death without an heir, the domain was placed under Matsumoto Domain for a year, until the transfer of Aoyama Munetoshi, who was raised from hatamoto status. He subsequently served as Osaka jōdai from 1662, and Komoro was given to Sakai Tadayoshi, formerly of Isesaki Domain. Sakai was demoted to Tanaka Domain in Suruga Province in 1679.
The next ruler of Komoro was Nishio Tadanari, formerly of Tanaka Domain. He made great efforts to undo the damage caused by the misgovernment of Sakai Tadayoshi, but was transferred to Yokosuka Domain in 1682. Komoro was then given to a junior branch of the Matsudaira clan from 1679 to 1702.
In 1702, Makino Yasushige was transferred to Komoro from Yoita Domain in Echigo Province. This at last brought stability to the administration of the domain, as the Makino clan continued to rule until the Meiji restoration.

Welcome To Asago City
Asago city is located near the center of the Hyogo Prefecture, an important center of traffic which links Tajima and San-In district. The city possesses a great nature with river, mountain, and is inhabited by more than 33000 people.
The City of Asago has a great amount of historical and cultural sites. Out of the hundred of castles situated in Japan, Asago city counts one of its finest, the ruins of Takeda Castle. The castle has the particularity of being constructed with an Ishigaki wall (a wall built by piling up stones as they were in their natural shape and form) which can still be seen now. Thus, in the early morning in autumn, a fog surrounding the castle can be seen and the view is such that the castle resembles a castle floating in the sky. The names of “castle floating in the sky” or “Japan’s Machu Picchu” has been given to the ruins of Takeda Castle.
You can also visit the great industrial heritage that is the Ikuno Silver Mines, which have 1200 years of history.
Asago City also has the Chasurin Yama Tumuli which is the biggest Tumuli of the Kansai area, a great art museum and a beautiful park of wisteria floribunda on the shelter of the mountains.

- quote -
Sasayama Domain (篠山藩, Sasayama-han)
was a Japanese domain of the Edo period, located in Tanba Province.
It was founded in 1609, when Matsudaira Yasushige moved there from the Yakami Domain. The domain changed hands several times until 1748, when it was given to 青山忠朝 Aoyama Tadatomo (1708-1760). The Aoyama family remained there until 1868; the domain itself was abolished in 1871. Its territory first became part of the short-lived Toyooka Prefecture, before being made part of Hyogo Prefecture in 1876; it remains part of Hyogo Prefecture to the present day.
The Aoyama, the last ruling family, became viscounts in the Meiji era.

Nishi-Hamadani

Yoshimori no to 義盛の塔 the memorial tower of Yoshimori
Once the memorial tower was crying every night, begging to be brought back to 濱谷 Hamadani. So finally they brought it back to where it belonged.

Ise no Saburo Yoshimori
retainer of Minamoto no Yoshitsune

- quote -
Ise Saburo was one of the four attendants of the prince Yoshitsune. While Yoshitsune himself was considered an expert in ninjutsu, Ise no Saburo Yoshimori was in fact one of the leaders of shinobi bands near Ueno region. Depicted in many theater plays and renowned by Yoshitsune Monogatari, Yoshimori represents an example of a devoted samurai vassal, yet also skilled in ninjutsu.
It is considered that Ise Saburo had been born in Zairyo or Iga – a place in Ueno area, whence the pronunciation of his name as ‘Saburo’ comes; another name of his was Yakeshita Koroku. Yoshitsune Monogatari says that Yoshimori clan came from some other place and faithfully served the Minamoto clan. But Ise Saburo, raised without a father, headed a band of bandits, laying claim to ‘his’ territory – upland near Iga.
However, after meeting Yoshitsune,
Ise Saburo returned to serving his lord, just as his ancestors did. His loyalty and martial skills made him one of the prince Minamoto’s first generals. But that fact doesn’t understate his combat skills – in battle Ise Saburo demonstrated remarkable techniques, killing and capturing enemies no less than any other of Yoshitsune favorites did. His skill in using the ‘bear paw’ (kumade, a special instrument used by ninja and other warriors as a grappling iron or hook) is mentioned. Ise no Saburo Yoshimori faced his death together with his brothers-in-arms, protecting their lord in a last stand. Being severely wounded, he could not continue the fight and committed ritual suicide.
Yet his wisdom and knowledge did not pass by the succeeding generations. A collection of poems (tanka) on ninjutsu and ninja strategy supposedly authored by him has remained. As these were collected 500 years after his death it is doubtful that he truly wrote them. A few of them were included in Bansenshukai ninja manual under the title ‘A Hundred Poems About The Ninja’.
