Since horses were the main means of transportation, their "horse apples" had to be collected off the road and disposed of. It was be sold to the nearby farmers for manure.

Legend about bafun
Iwate 岩手県

九戸郡 Kunohe 軽米町 Karumai town
If one walks along the Hachinohe Kaido and gives some fish to the fox on the road, he will not be bewitched.
If one does not give any fish, back home the backpack basket will be filled with bafun 馬糞 horse manure.

Legend about bafun from Nagano 飯田市 Iida city
.
When the actors with their 越後獅子 Echigojishi climbed up a gorge on the way, they saw a fox taking a nep and threw stones at it. A while later they came to a large estate and performed their lion dance. The daughter of the estate prepared a good meal for them and let them have a bath. When the bath water felt cold, they had a good look.
The house and the girl had disappeared and there was only a large barley field. The good meal they had eaten was only bafun 馬糞 horse manure.
.
they were bewitched by a fox.
