Kaore Gorge is a 0.5 km gorge along the Kaore Kaido road and the Otogawa River in the northern part of Sakuragata Town in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. It is a scenic spot where you can enjoy seasonal changes in the scenery including cherry blossoms in early spring, Koinobori (carp streamers) in May, tender green in summer and crimson foliage in fall.
Especially beautiful is the cherry blossom season,
when the entire gorge is colored pale pink by about 80 Somei Yoshino cherry trees. From April through May, about 200 carp streamers are set out over the upstream of the river, which create a wonderful landscape. In summer, you can enjoy forest bathing in brilliant fresh green together with refreshing sound of clear water and fresh air.
The best hiking season is from the middle of November to early December, when the gorge is surrounded with beautiful autumn leaves.

During the Cheery blossom season, it is especially beautiful, as the entire gorge is colored pale pink by about 80 Somei Yoshino cherry trees. From April through May, about 200 carp streamers are set out over the upstream of the river.
In summer, the Gorge becomes popular amongst bathers wishing to make the most of the clear air and fresh spring water.
The best hiking season is from the middle of November to early December, when the area is surrounded with beautiful autumn leaves.

全長約７ｋｍに及ぶ断崖の渓谷。神秘的な秘境を高さ２０ｍの橋から覗き込むと、まるで吸い込まれてしまいそう。渓谷に響く水の音に聞き入りながら、一周４０分程度の遊歩道を散策するのも◎ 落差８０ｍもある滝は下部に虹が見えることも。「飛騨美濃紅葉三十三選」にも選出された紅葉は、色鮮やかな木々と渓谷の荒々しさのコントラストが見ものです。

In the river Fuefukigawa there were two hollows and then from Mitomi the lumber was transported downriver.
If anything fell into the hollow, it was lost to the deep bottom.
To prevent things from getting lost, people made offerings of sakedaru 酒1樽 one barrel of sake rice wine and sekihan 赤飯 one dish of auspicious red rice to the Suijin 水神 Deity of Water.
The barrels and rice were bound together strongly and placed into the hollow in the evening. Next morning they would float empty on the water.

Kobo Daishi Kukai 弘法大師
Once upon a time,
弘法大師 Kobo Daishi was in 川浦地方 the Kawaura region and begged an old woman for some kayu 粥 rice gruel made with 粟 millet.
The old woman said she had kept some ヤマメ Yamame trout in the gruel and it tasted unpleasant, so she could not give it to him. Kobo Daishi said if she would let the fish back into the river, they will come back to life. When the old woman threw the boiled 山女魚 Yamame into the river, they came back to life and swam away with the rice gruel still on their bodies.
Since that time, the Yamame in the river 笛吹川 Fuefukigawa have some spots like millet grains on their body.

Wakasa Kaido 若桜街道 （わかさかいどう) Wakasa Highway
This old highway connects the city of Tottori with nearby 若桜町 Wakasa town.
Now National Highway Nr. 29.
When the road reached Hyogo prefecture, it was named 因幡街道 Inaba Kaido.

- Early history
The mountainous areas of Wakasa do not appear to have supported a population in early Japanese history.
No remains from the Jōmon (14,000 – 300 BCE) or Yayoi 300 BCE – 250 CE) periods have been found in Wakasa. The town had two or three small settlements in the Kofun period (250 – 538). Wakasa became part of Yakami District in Inaba Province early in recorded Japanese history. Settlements in the area are appeared early in the Heian period (794 – 1185), and the name of a village called Wakasa first appear in the historical record this time.
The Yabe clan controlled Wakasa throughout the Heian period to the end of the Kamakura period (1185 – 1333). The Yabe built 若桜鬼ヶ城（わかさおにがじょう）Wakasa Onigajo Castle in this period.A The existence of the Yabe clan and Oniga castle are noted in the Taiheiki, a Japanese historical epic written in the late 14th century.
- Later history
Wakasa, located in a richly forested area of the Chūgoku Mountains, was a source of lumber and lumber products from early times. The production of raw timber, planks, charcoal, and firewood is noted as early as the Kamakura period. These products, as well as rice, were transported on the Hattō River for export to other parts of Japan via the Japan Sea.
At the beginning of the Edo period (1603 – 1868) the Tokugawa shogunate developed land for rice paddies in Wakasa as part of a nationwide effort to increase rice production in Japan. The mountainous areas of Wakasa provided extensive irrigation for rice-producing areas in the flatlands of the lower Sendai River, but Wakasa suffered frequent flooding from the Hattō River, notably in 1815 and 1888.
After the Meiji Restoration in 1868 Wakasa became part of the newly formed Tottori Prefecture. The town was officially incorporated under administrative reforms by the Meiji government in 1889.

Once a child was bewitched by a fox. A Buddhist priest performed rituals and blew his horagai ホラ貝 conch shell during the whole night.
Next morning the child was dead.

Near the Chizubashi bridge. A samurai called 花房彌次郎 / 花房弥次郎 Hanabusa Yajiro lived here.
Yajiro had a dream about a Yamabushi who told him he could not go to the Buddhist paradise and asked Yajiro to perform rituals for him.
Yajiro went to the temple 龍峯寺 Ryubu-Ji and asked the priest to perform rituals. After that, the bad dreams of Yajiro stopped.

In the lake 多鯰ヶ池 Tanegaike there lived a huge catfish. His mouth was more than 3 meters wide. Once some people came by boat to cross this lake and the catfish tried to swallow them with the boat.
There also lived a special unagi 鰻 eel in the lake.
Only its head was huge, but the rest of its body was very frail.

若桜町 Wakasa town

. Kannon Bosatsu 観音菩薩 伝説 legends about Kannon .
Once a thief wanted to steal the Kannon statue in the yard of the school of the hamlet 中原 Nakahara. He tried to carry it, but it became more and more heavy. When he turned to bring it back, it became light again.
Another version tells of a rope which the thief used, and it fell apart.

Many years ago there was a special hospital for densenbyosha 伝染病者 people with infectious epidemic diseases above the statue of Kannon.
A nearby farmhouse had a fire and a bundle of straw flew toward the hospital, which also begun to burn.
Since it was above the Kannon statue, people thought the deity did not like the hospital and helped to burn it.

Konjin San is a wicket deity who curses people.
Once it was outdide the home, but a priest advised to put it inside on the kamidana 神棚 shelf of the Gods and venerate it there.

If people do not venerate this deity properly, they will be cursed.
Once something bad happened in the hamlet and people said it was the curse of 門田家の荒神さん Kojin sama from the Kadota family.
Now they come and venerate there to appease the deity.

kimodameshi 肝試し test of courage
On the 14th day of the 12th month, the day when the famous 47 Ronin killed their enemy as told in the Chushingura story,
the young people from the village have to pass a test of courage.
They have to go to the graveyard or the local Shinto shrine at night and the elders threaten them from behind the big 銀杏 Gingko tree along the road.

Deep in the mountains of the 吉川 Yoshikawa hamlet there were many forest workers cutting trees, living in a small hut. At night a woman came peeking into the hut. The woodcutters were afraid and slept with their axes by the bedside. The next evening the woman came again and walked into the hut, looking at each one face. When she came to the last one in the back, he took his ax to kill her, but she run away. All his companions had their tongues cut out and were dead.
All the villagers from Yoshikawa went to the mountain now and followed the blood trail until they came to a cave in a valley. In the hole they found the white hair of a Tanuki, who had killed all the people.

From Obama (Wakasa, Fukui) to Kyoto, 出町柳 Demachiyanagi.

Fukui is famous for the
makerel road (saba kaidoo　鯖街道、さばかいどう- saba kaido) transporting fish to Kyoto.
Therefore many simple makerel dishes have been prepared in busy fishing times.
The road leads from the port of Obama at the Bay of Wakasa to Kyoto, about 75 kilometers. The fish was salted and packed in Obama and then carried over night to the city. It was then just rightly marinated and folks waited in line to buy it.
Other routes for transporting saba are also known. Many farmers exchanged their newly harvested rice to get some fish for the autumnal autumn festival and their Saba Sushi.

Obama was also the endpoint of many ships from Asia trying to reach Japan during its long history. So embassies and their presents for the emperor and aristocrats in Kyoto also travelled along this road, the final step of any "Silk Road" through Asia or via the ocean.

Miketsukuni and Saba-kaido Road: Cultural heritages linking the Japan Sea
to Nara and Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan
The province of Wakasa was situated along the Sea of Japan’s coastline in what is now Fukui Prefecture. It was referred to as miketsukuni (a region that produced food offerings for the Imperial Court) and played an important role in providing foodstuffs such as sea salt,mackerel, and other marine products to the ancient, landlocked capital of Nara and Kyoto. Wakasa's role as a source of supplying the foodstuffs led to the development of a unique culinary culture. The coastal hub of Wakasa also connected the sea trade from China and Korea to the inland trade routes.
Local ports and castle towns sprang up and flourished along this route. Traveling tradesmen brought with them festival customs, entertainments, and Buddhist culture that soon spread far and wide into rural farming areas and fishing villages. This ultimately resulted in distinct cultures and customs evolving in the different villages and hamlets. The ancient thoroughfare is now called the saba-kaido (Mackerel Road) and here visitors can experience nature, eat delicious traditional foods, attend festivals, as well as view traditional houses and roads that hearken back to the earlier days of great prosperity. ...

Several highways which have been referred to as “Saba-kaido” in recent years connecting Wakasa Province and Kyoto played an important role not only in supplying foodstuffs but also in exchanging various goods, people, and culture. “Saba-kaido” refers to a highway supplying marine products and fish such as mackerel called “saba” in Japanese to the Imperial family and Imperial court in Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan. Cultural exchange initiated by the connection with the Imperial Court and the aristocracy in Nara and Kyoto permeated the entire civilian life both in rural farming areas and fishing villages in Wakasa Province through the interaction of people taking these Saba-kaido highways and developed into rich cultural heritages such as old temples and shrines, unique streetscapes, folk cultural assets along Saba-kadio highways of Wakasa region whose rich and diverse cultural aspects can hardly be found elsewhere in Japan.

Salted guji has been carried to Kyoto via the Mackerel Road (saba kaidoo) together with mackerels. In the Bay of Wakasa, cold and warm currents meet and is is a rough terrain for fish, so they are fatty.

Kurihan Kaido 九里半街道 Kurihan Highway
Connecting 今津 Imazu in 近江国 Omi on the West side of 琵琶湖 Lake Biwako with 若狭国小浜 Obama in Wakasa, Fukui.
The distance between these tow towns was just nin Ri 九里 and a half 半i, hence the name. One Ri is about 4 m.

For the land transport of goods from the harbour of Wakasa to 琵琶湖 Lake Biwako.
From Lake Biwako the transport continued by ship to the harbour of 大津湊 Otsu and then to Kyoto.
The road was also used to transport lumber for the construction of Fushimi Castle.

The traders on the road were called

is an old province of Japan, which today comprises Shiga Prefecture.It was one of the provinces that made up the Tōsandō circuit. Its nickname is Gōshū (江州).

... Hōjō Tokimasa, the first shikken of the Kamakura shogunate, was made daimyō of Ōmi Province in the 10th month of Shōji 2 (1200).
During the Sengoku period, the northern part of the province was the fief of Ishida Mitsunari, Tokugawa Ieyasu's opponent at the Battle of Sekigahara, although he spent most of his time in Osaka Castle administering the fief of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's young son. After Ishida's defeat, Tokugawa granted the fief to his allies, the Ii clan, who built the castle and town of Hikone from the ruins of Sawayama.

was a province of Japan in the area that is today the southwestern portion of Fukui Prefecture in the Hokuriku region of Japan. Wakasa bordered on Echizen, Ōmi, Tanba, Tango, and Yamashiro Provinces. Wakasa existed as a political entity before the Ritsuryō system and the implementation of the Taihō Code of the Nara period. Wooden shipping tags labelled "Wakasa" have been found in the ruins of Fujiwara-kyō. Per the Nihon Shoki, ancient Wakasa was governed by a Kuni no miyatsuko, who was a descendant of Amenohiboko, a semi-legendary prince of Shilla, who settled in Tajima province during the reign of Emperor Suinin. There are archaeological indications that Wakasa was under control of the Yamato state from the mid-4th century. The province of Wakasa was formally established with the creation of the Ritsuryō provincial system around 701 AD, and initially consisted of the two districts of Onyū and Mikata. In 825 AD, Ōi was separated from Onyū.
During the Nara and Heian periods,
Wakasa was an important source of sea products (salt, fish and konbu) to the aristocracy of the capital, so much so that the province was nicknamed Miketsu Province (御食国, Miketsu-no-kuni). Salt production was especially and important industry. Wakasa was also a strategically important province due to its seaport on the Sea of Japan and was the closest ocean harbour to Kyoto .
The exact location of the provincial capital of Wakasa is unknown, but is believed to have been in what is now the city of Obama. The Wakasa Kokubun-ji and the ichinomiya of Wakasa, the Wakasahiko Shrine are also located in Obama.

It begins at 石原村 Ishihara village at the old 熊谷宿 Kumagaya postal station of the 中山道 Nakasendo in Saitama.
Along the gorge 荒川渓谷沿 of the river Arakawa to 秩父大宮 Chichibu Omiya (now Chichibu city).
Then over the pass 雁坂峠 Karisaka Toge to 甲府 Kofu in Yamanashi.

The Chichibu pilgrimage
dates back to the early 13th century. It originally consisted of 33 temples dedicated to Kannon but by 1536 a 34th temple was added to the list with the consequence that the Saigoku, Bandō and Chichibu pilgrimages together form a 100-temple Kannon pilgrimage.

秩父街道の伝説と昔話 Tales from the Chichibu Highway

Once upon a time,
弘法大師 Kobo Daishi was in 川浦地方 the Kawaura region and begged an old woman for some kayu 粥 rice gruel made with 粟 millet.
The old woman said she had kept some ヤマメ Yamame trout in the gruel and it tasted unpleasant, so she could not give it to him. Kobo Daishi said if she would let the fish back into the river, they will come back to life. When the old woman threw the boiled 山女魚 Yamame into the river, they came back to life and swam away with the rice gruel still on their bodies.
Since that time, the Yamame in the river 笛吹川 Fuefukigawa have some spots like millet grains on their body.

In the river Fuefukigawa there were two hollows and then from Mitomi the lumber was transported downriver.
If anything fell into the hollow, it was lost to the deep bottom.
To prevent things from getting lost, people made offerings of 酒1樽 one barrel of sake rice wine and 赤飯 one dish of auspicious red rice to the Suijin 水神 Deity of Water.
The barrels and rice were bound together strongly and placed into the hollow in the evening. Next morning they would float empty on the water.

Once a giant took 武甲山 Mount Bukkosan and 宝登山 Mount Hodosan and put each one in a straw basket. Then he put one on each side of a tenbinboo 天秤棒 shoulder carrying pole made from the ridge of 尾田藤 Odafuji.
Part of the mountains fell off and became 宝登山 Hodosan and 箕山 Minoyama.

Awa Kaido 阿波街道 Awa Highway

Awa no kuni 阿波国 Awa province, is the old name for the Northern parts of Tokushima prefecture.

The 阿讃山脈 Sanuki Mountain range lies on the border of 香川県 Kagawa and 徳島県 Tokushima.
There are various tooge 峠 passes for crossing of the highway:
大坂峠 Osaka Toge, 鵜の田尾峠 Unotao Toge, 境目 Sakaime. 猪ノ鼻峠 Inohana Toge.

In the former 讃岐国 Sanuki no Kuni (now Kagawa) the highway was called Awa Kaido.
In Tokushima, the highway was called 讃岐街道 Sanuki Kaido.

In Tokushima on this highway was a town called 阿波町 Awacho, with more than 200 m along the road.
- The modern city of Awa was established on April 1, 2005, from the merger of the former town of Awa, absorbing the town of Ichiba, and the towns of Donari and Yoshino.

In Tadotsu town in Kagawa was the famous Konpira Shrine and the roads for this pilgrimage were called
金毘羅街道 Konpira Kaido / 金毘羅往来 Konpira Orai.

Imabari Kaido 今治街道 Imabari Highway

It leads from Saijō 西条 Saijo along the coast of the 高縄半島 Takanawa Hanto Peninsula to Imabari city, Ehime,
about 90 km.
Saijo was especially active as the entrance city for the mountain pilgrimage to 石鎚山 Ishizuchisan.
西条 Saijo was also very close to 松山市 Matsuyama city.



Imabari is the last station of the しまなみ海道　Shimanami Kaido , about 60 km, from Honshu to Shikoku.
Nishiseto Expressway, often called the Shimanami Kaidō, connecting Onomichi, Hiroshima and Imabari.

From Kawanone in Ehime via 新宮、馬立 and the pass 笹ヶ峰峠 to Kochi.
In Kochi via 大豊町立川（たぢかわ）the Tachikawa river in Otoyo、本山町 Motoyama and a few more towns to the castle of Kochi.
This road has been in use since 707 as 北山官道 Kitayama Kando, a road for the local governor.
In the Edo period it was used by the Daimyo of Tosa for the regular visits to Edo.
There was also a shortcut to the Konpira Shrine.

In Kochi via 甲浦 Kannoura , 室戸 Muroto, 安芸 Aki, 赤岡 Akaoka and more towns.
Most is the modern national road Nr. 55.

A sea route until 橘 Tachibana, from there along the river 桑野川 Kuwanogawa. From 鷲敷 Wajiki along the river 那賀川 Nakagawa.
After crossing the Yotsuashi Pass to Kochi, along the river 物部川 Monobegawa to 大栃 Odochi, 美良布 Birafu,
山田 Yamada and 後免 Gomen, reaching Kochi.
(Now there is a long tunnel of 1857 m below the pass.)

In Susaki was a turn to the
Yusuhara Kaido 檮原街道 Yusuhara Highway
In Ehime from 北宇和郡鬼北町 Kihoku town in the Kita-Uwa district to the 大洲街道 Ozu Kaido.
Then South to 宇和島 Uwajima.
A lot of 鰹 Katsuo bonito fish from Tosa was transported via this road.

Some say it was the escape road that 坂本龍馬 Sakamoto Ryoma took when leaving his home domaine in 1862.

Marugame Kaido 丸亀街道 Marugame Highway

Marugame was a harbour city in Kagawa, reached in the Edo period by pilgrims for the Konpira Shrine / Kotohira Shrine in about 3 long days on a ship from Osaka.
From the harbour it took about 14 km along the Marugame Kaido to the Shrine.

Muya Kaido 撫養街道 Muya Highway
Also called 淡路街道 Awaji Kaido.
Muya is the old name of 鳴門市 Naruto city, Tokushima.



In the Edo period this road was maintained by the Daimyo 藩主蜂須賀家政 Hachisuka Iemasa (1558 - 1639).
It took about 67 km from Muya town via 岡崎 Okazaki to 池田 Ikeda, Tokushima.
The road was mostly used for the transportation of indigo, salt, tobacco leaves and lumber.
Pilgrims of the Shikoku Henro tour could get of at the harbour of Okazaki
The town of 撫養町 Muya now belongs to 鳴門市 Naruto city.
Muya was a connected by a sea route to 淡路島 Awaji Island and the harbour towns of 福良 Fukura, 洲本 Sumoto and 由良 Yuura and then again by sea to 紀伊 Kii (Wakayama).

To the West of Mura Kaido, along the northern shore of the river 吉野川 Yoshinogawa and leading to Ikeda.

Sanuki Kaido 讃岐街道 Sanuki Highway

From Marugame in Sanuki no Kuni along the Northern Shore of Shikoku via 観音寺 Kannonji, 川之江 Kawanoe,
新居浜 Niihama to 小松 Komatsu (now 現西条市 Saijo city).
Saijo was especially active as the entrance city for the mountain pilgrimage to 石鎚山 Ishizuchisan.
西条 Saijo was also very close to 松山市 Matsuyama city.

Tadotsu Kaido 多度津街道 Tadotsu Highway



The Kaido leads from Tadotsu city, Kagawa, to the famous Konpira shrine.
The roads for this pilgrimage were called
金毘羅街道 Konpira Kaido / 金毘羅往来 Konpira Orai.

The martial art of Shorinji Kempo (少林寺拳法) was founded in 1947 by 宗道臣 So Doshin
at the temple Dōryū-ji 道隆寺 Doryu-Ji in Tadotsu.
The temple is Nr. 77 of the Shikoku Henro Pilgrimage.

Along the old Awa Kaido there is a very low-lying area, which had a bad reputation of bringing disaster to its owner.
A man had used it for farming but now it is not used any more. Only reeds are growing here. now.
