Senzoku 千束 Senzoku district "1000 measures"
Taito ward 台東区 千束, in the Shitaya area

The name Senzoku is very old. The area was near 浅草天王町 Asakusa Tenno-Cho, reaching all the way to 千住 Senju.
One explanation of this name "1000 measures of rice" say the area was near the 浅草寺 Asakusa Temple Sensō-Ji and had to provide kuyoo 供養 food offerings (rice) for the 1000 priests and monks of the famous temple district:
senzoku 千僧供 food offerings for 1000 monks.
But this explanation is most probably wrong.
soku (zoku) 束 was a measurement for the amount of 穎稲 rice before the harvest, 1束 - 稲10把
(10把 - 1刈)- 束刈(そくかり)sokukari / 束把刈(そくはかり)sokubakari
This would suggest that on the fields of the temple, they harvested 1000 soku of rice.

Sensoku ike / Senzoku ike 千束池 / 洗足池 Senzoku pond
洗足池 "pond for washing the feet"

- quote -
Senzoku-ike is located in Northern Ota Ward, six stops from Ikegami Station. The area is named after the famous Buddhist priest Nichiren Shonin who washed his feet here on his way to Ikegami Temple. Senzoku literally means “washing your feet” which is exactly what Nichiren Shonin and many priests after him did at the large pond located here.
Senzoku-Ike (Pond)
Senzoku-Ike pond is famous for its scenic views and is a spiritual power spot where the natural energy from local vegetation is abundant. The park and pond are an ideal place for both walking and boating. There are paths around the water that will take you past small temples and the area where priests used to rest on their pilgrimage to Ikegami Honmonji Temple. Much of the path is covered in shade and trees and the pond can be circumvented fairly quickly taking a path approximately one and a half kilometers in length.
Small boats and swan boats can both be rented nearby the station side of the pond for those interested in spending 30 minutes or an hour on the water.
Senzoku-Ike Park
The park area surrounds the pond and includes wooden paths that cross over the water and a wide variety of trees and vegetation. There are many spots to stop for a picnic and during certain seasons and holidays, there are several food stands and activities to liven up the walk.
The graves of Katsu Kaishu and his wife who wanted to be buried with a view facing Mount Fuji. Katsu Kaishu was commander of the Tokugawa Navy and is famous for his role in the surrender of Edo.
Senzokuhachiman Shrine
The small shrine here is located on the opposite side of the pond from the station on a small hill. The shrine is surrounded by nature and a few statues in the shape of large horses. There are interesting events held in the shrine during festivals such as the Edo-Sato-Kagura (Japanese holy Shintoism dance).

Senzoku Hachiman Jinja 千束八幡神社 Senzoku Hachiman Shrine

Edo Meisho Zue 江戸名所図会

- quote -
... Another story suggestive of the mysterious charm of the Senzoku pond tells how Minamoto-no Yoritomo (1147-99), the founder of the Kamakura shogunate, camped overnight in 1180 at Senzoku Hachiman shrine (glimpsed in the woods on the left of the woodblock print). While he was admiring the moon reflected in the water that night, a magnificent wild horse emerged from nowhere, its satin-smooth coat shining in the moonlight. Yoritomo caught the stallion, which he named Ikezuki (“Moon in the Pond”), and the steed became the shogun’s beloved companion in his subsequent battles — he rode the horse during his entry into Kamakura later the same year.

千束の池袈裟懸松 Kesagake-no-Matsu at Senzoku-Ike Pond
The name of the Senzoku-Ike Pond comes from a legend where The Venerable Nichiren stopped
and washed his feet to heel fatigue out of travelling on the way from Kuon-ji Temple on Mt. Minobu to Ibaraki for medical treatment.
The pine tree onto which he hung his Kesa 袈裟 (Buddhist monk's robe) after taking it off at such a moment is the "Kesagake-no-Matsu".
