Monzennakachoo, Monzen-Nakachō 門前仲町 Monzen-Nakacho district
江東区 Koto ward, 門前仲町一丁目 . 門前仲町二丁目 first and second sub-district
lit. a town at the gate of a temple or shrine.
This was usually a very busy street with many pilgrims and visitors.

The most important festival, 深川祭り Fukagawa Matsuri, takes place in the streets of Monzen-Nakacho in the middle of August.

An integral part of the capital’s ‘shitamachi’ (old downtown), it retains an Edo-era (1603-1868) atmosphere thanks to the storied Tomioka Hachiman Shrine and Fukagawa Fudoson Temple and the plethora of eateries and shops that have been around since the olden days. Monzen-Nakacho (locals call it 門仲‘Mon-Naka’) really comes into its own when night falls and the countless izakayas and small restaurants open, filling the air with tipsy chatter and smoke from charcoal grills. This is heaven for the budget-conscious drinker – if you know where to head, that is. Here are our picks.

Upstream is 古石場川 the river Furuishibagawa and merges on the left riverside with 大横川 the river Oyokogawa.

Furuishibagawa 古石場川
flows in Koto ward.
It was a canal to transport lumber connecting the rivers Oyokogawa and the river 平久川 Heikyugawa.
The lumberyards were later moved and the canal is now part of the park.

To walk along the canal and enjoy seasonal flowers.

Furuishiba 古石場 district
古石場一丁目 - 古石場三丁目 from first to third sub-district.
When 大田道潅 Ota Dokan built the castle of Edo, he used stones from Izu to be transported and loaded off here.
First it was called Ishiokiba 右置場 Place to store stones.
