Kodaira city Ogawa

Kodaira shi 小平市 Kodaira city

Kodaira is located in the Musashino Terrace near the geographic center of Tokyo Metropolis.
The area of present-day Kodaira
was part of ancient Musashi Province. In the post-Meiji Restoration catastral reform of July 22, 1878, the area became part of Kita-Tama District in Kanagawa Prefecture.
The village of Kodaira was created on April 1, 1889 with the establishment of municipalities law. Kitatama District was transferred to the administrative control of Tokyo Metropolis on April 1, 1893. The population of the area expanded after the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake with the relocation of universities and housing areas from central Tokyo. Kodaira was elevated to town status in 1944 and to city status on October 1, 1962.

Ōmekaidō Station is a railway station in Kodaira, by the Seibu Railway.

The name Kodaira refers to two things:
小 ko (read O in the name of Ogawa Kurobei)
平 daira (taira) as in a flat piece of land.

The plain which was rather dry was irrigated by the
. Tamagawa Joosui 多摩川上水 Tamagawa Josui canal　.
The estates of the farmers were distributed to both sides of the canal as narrow, but rather long pieces of land, like a tansaku 短冊 long slip of paper to write poetry on it.
Since the farmers had to walk around these long fields to visit each other, they made a small path after the main gardens, the
takaramichi　たから道 "treasure path".

Ogawa cho 小川町 Ogawa district, "small river"
東京都小平市小川町一丁目及び小川町二丁目　Kodaira city, from 1 to 2nd sub-district

This district takes its name from
小川九郎兵衛 Ogawa Kurobei (1622 - 1670), who developed the land in the early Edo period, around 1656, with the permission of the Edo Bakufu government.
Kurobei was from a Samurai family, which was loyal to the Odawara Hojo clan and had to flee when the clan was devastated. They went to Oku-Tama to 岸村 Kishi mura, where Kurobei was born.

He also developed a system of drainage canals to keep the village from flooding (nigemizu no sato 逃げ水の里).
The land was uninhabited and only thieves and robbers lured here, making it unsafe for travelers, who could not find shops or water.
Not many farmers wanted to live in such conditions in the beginning, and Kurobei even used his own money to persuade some to come here.
This sons were the headmen of the village for many generations.

Ogawa was located along the 青梅街道 Ome Kaido Highway. The village of 小川村 Ogawa mura profited from the highway travelers, providing the with fresh horses (馬継場).
The village had ケヤキ並木 zelkova trees for shadow along the road and 防風林 windbreak trees around the farm houses.

Shoosenji 小川寺（しょうせんじ） Temple Shosen-Ji
In honor of 小川九郎兵衛 Ogawa Kurobei.
His grave is in the temple compound. You can also see the protective trees around the temple.

oni 鬼 demons
On the night of the Setsubun rituals to drive out the demons,those driven out from the neighbourhood came to the Ogawa family. They were served sekihan 赤飯 red auspicious rice and ritual Sake.
At the hme of the 植竹家 Uetake family there was a kamidana 神棚 shelf for the gods named oni no yado no kamisama 鬼の宿の神様 Deity of the lodging of the Demons. with a black zushi 厨子 miniature shrine. During the Setsubun rituals, the demons could shelter there.

Akita to Miyagi

From 湯沢市 Yuzawa city in Akita, over the pass 鬼首峠 Onikobe Toge, then into 宮城県 Miyagi prefecture
to the city of Ōsaki 大崎市 Osaki.
Part of the 羽後街道 Ugo Kaido (from 石巻市－本庄市 Ishinomaki to Honjo.

The Onikobe legends are related to

... a general and shogun of the early Heian Period of Japan.
His local opponent was
Aterui / Akuro-o / Acro-o アテルイ / 阿久呂王 / 阿弖流爲 / 悪路王 Akuro (? - 802)
At the time of Tamuramaro the Emishi 蝦夷 inhabitants of Northern Japan were seen as oni 鬼 demons
and Akuro was their king.
After Tamuramaro had killed Akuro, he transported his head to Kyoto, hence many legends on the way.

阿久呂王 Akuro had been pursued as an Oni demon and came to 神室山 Mount Kamurosan (1,365 m).
His enemy shot an arrow at him near Sendai and killed the demon.
This place is now called 鬼首 Onikobe.

People come to this mound to get relief from illness of the head.
The head of Akuro was on the way to be carried to Kyoto, when the carrier passed here and the head became so heavy,
he could not carry it any further.

宮城県玉造郡鳴子町　鬼首地区 - In the town of Naruko there is one area called Onikobe.

The Demon had been chased and crossed the Onitoge pass, but was found out and killed at the field now called
鬼打田 Oniuchida. His cut-off head flew away and fell down at a place called
Onikobe in Naruko.
This is now the famous ski resort Narukoonsen Onikobe Ōsaki in Miyagi

Akuro アクロ王 King Akuro

He had been killed at Esashi, Iwayado, by Tamuramaro. His head flew off to Onikobe in Tamatsukuri,
his body fell down at Onishigai 鬼死骸 "bones of the dead Oni".

oni kubi fukiage yu 鬼首吹上湯 / オニクビフキアゲユ blowing Hot Spring of the Demon Head
坂上田村麻呂 Sakanoue no Tamuramaro had captured the leader of the Emishi and cut off his head at 箆岳山 Mount Nonodakeyama.
The head begun to cry and fly off to the Western sky. When it fell down, a hot spring begun to blow up (fuki-age), hence the name.

All of a sudden the Demon Deity came to live on 神室山 Mount Kamurosan (1,365 m), hunted for humans and ate them.
The Emperor ordered a member of the Tamura clan to drive him out. He chased him all the way to Sendai and finally killed him. The place is now known as 鬼首 Onikobe.

In the year 1854 in the 6th lunar month there was constantly ashes raining down to the ground of the Tenjin Shrine in 麹町 Kojimachi.
People thought it was the malicious deed of a Tanuki badger.

She likes the number three, so she likes to come here.

Someone saw her on the road in 千代田区 Chiyoda ward. If there are three people walking together, she comes after them with a knife.

kurokamikiri 黒髪切 black hair cutter

In the middle of the night a black monster comes out and cuts the hair of people.
Its hands are said to look like scissors, sometimes his mouth also.

The black hair cutter or Kurokamikiri
is one of the most grotesque and disturbing yokai and has a hair obsession. Kurokamikiri is vaguely humanoid. It has a bloated body with chubby arms and legs. It has no neck but a bulbous head. Its skin is deepest black and the only features visible are a wide mouth with a slug like tongue and huge flat teeth, and two tiny, evil yellow eyes spaced far apart on its dark visage. Kurokamikiri will creep up behind its victims and bite off their hair.
Kurokamikiri is said to make a “mogaaaaa!”sound.

A monster version of うら若きむすめ urawakaki musume.

She was often shown in 見世物小屋 curio shows.

Once the children of the village were telling stories when in the room next-door there was a strange noise of something falling down. When they looked, it was a huge, huge rice cake and they all enjoyed to eat it together.
"Let's hope another one will fall down!" they wondered and indeed, there was again a noise in the room next-door.
"Where is that rice cake?" shouted a huge man.
They all run away in great fear.

tachifusagaru 立塞がる to stand in one's way

A kind of whirlwind (tatsumaki たつまき) that occurs in Saitama.
Also called kawa no tachifusagari 川のたちふさがり (you can not cross the river).
Sometimes it occurs right in the middle of a river and people were quite afraid of it.
It looked like a fearful monster to the people of old.

The castle has the particularity of being constructed with an Ishigaki wall (a wall built by piling up stones as they were in their natural shape and form) which can still be seen now. Thus, in the early morning in autumn, a fog surrounding the castle can be seen and the view is such that the castle resembles a castle floating in the sky. The names of “castle floating in the sky” or “Japan’s Machu Picchu” has been given to the ruins of Takeda Castle.
You can also visit the great industrial heritage that is the Ikuno Silver Mines,which have 1200 years of history.
Asago City also has the Chasurin Yama Tumuli which is the biggest Tumuli of the Kansai area, a great art museum and a beautiful park of wisteria floribunda on the shelter of the mountains.

Sasayama Domain (篠山藩, Sasayama-han)

The rikishi 力士 Sumo wrestlers from Sasayama always lost a bout when the Shogun came to look, but this time they all won.
When the lord of the domain, 青山忠裕 Aoyama Tadahiro, came back to his estate in Edo, the wrestlers had already left and went back home to Hyogo.
These wrestlers had been the Inari foxes from a shrine in the domain.
To show his gratitude, Tadahiro ordered special flags and ema 絵馬 votive tablets.
- The Inari Foxes from 王地山 / 王子山 Ojisan (Ojiyama) sometimes went to war and one fox looked like 1000 men to help winning.
- If the Inari fox howls, there will be a fire.

Yoshimori no to 義盛の塔 the memorial tower of Yoshimori
Once the memorial tower was crying every night, begging to be brought back to 濱谷 Hamadani. So finally they brought it back to where it belonged.

伊勢三郎義盛の供養塔（西浜谷）
篠山産業高校の西北方山麓の集落が西浜谷で、太古に篠山盆地が湖であったころ、浜辺であった名残の地名であろう。西北部の一段高い所に「毘沙門堂」があり、その奥へ１００メートルほど入った竹藪の中の台地に、源義経の四天王の一人、「伊勢三郎義盛の供養塔」という宝篋印塔（町・文）がある。高さ１．５９メートル、中輪の正面に梵字が刻まれているだけで無銘であるが、室町期かそれ以前の作である。ここには、もと湧泉（遊仙）山福応寺があった。
伊勢三郎義盛は伊勢国に生まれ、上野国で義経の家来となり、一字をもらったとされる。義盛は各地で奮戦し、文治元年（１１８５）には壇ノ浦の合戦の後、平宗盛・清宗父子を京へ護送している。
義経は、兄頼朝と不仲となり堀川の館を出た後、文治５年に奥州衣川館の戦いで自刃するまで、約３年間消息不明の期間がある。当地出身の鷲尾三郎経春のつてで、このうち相当長期にわたって三岳修験者たちに隠まわれていたとし、その間に三郎は亡くなったとも、鈴鹿山で自殺したとも、義経とともに北国落ちして、衣川で討死にしたともいう。いずれにしても、なじみの里で供養したのだろうと伝えられている。

Ise Saburo was one of the four attendants of the prince Yoshitsune. While Yoshitsune himself was considered an expert in ninjutsu, Ise no Saburo Yoshimori was in fact one of the leaders of shinobi bands near Ueno region. Depicted in many theater plays and renowned by Yoshitsune Monogatari, Yoshimori represents an example of a devoted samurai vassal, yet also skilled in ninjutsu.
It is considered that Ise Saburo had been born in Zairyo or Iga – a place in Ueno area, whence the pronunciation of his name as ‘Saburo’ comes; another name of his was Yakeshita Koroku. Yoshitsune Monogatari says that Yoshimori clan came from some other place and faithfully served the Minamoto clan. But Ise Saburo, raised without a father, headed a band of bandits, laying claim to ‘his’ territory – upland near Iga.
However, after meeting Yoshitsune,
Ise Saburo returned to serving his lord, just as his ancestors did. His loyalty and martial skills made him one of the prince Minamoto’s first generals. But that fact doesn’t understate his combat skills – in battle Ise Saburo demonstrated remarkable techniques, killing and capturing enemies no less than any other of Yoshitsune favorites did. His skill in using the ‘bear paw’ (kumade, a special instrument used by ninja and other warriors as a grappling iron or hook) is mentioned. Ise no Saburo Yoshimori faced his death together with his brothers-in-arms, protecting their lord in a last stand. Being severely wounded, he could not continue the fight and committed ritual suicide.
Yet his wisdom and knowledge did not pass by the succeeding generations. A collection of poems (tanka) on ninjutsu and ninja strategy supposedly authored by him has remained. As these were collected 500 years after his death it is doubtful that he truly wrote them. A few of them were included in Bansenshukai ninja manual under the title ‘A Hundred Poems About The Ninja’.

In the year 1810, there was a temple of the Ikko sect 高田派一向宗, where a stork had put up his nest. Until then the stork had put up his nest at the temple 西福寺 Saifuku-Ji. In the same year in December, there was a fire and the temple Saifuku-Ji burned down. They say if a stork moves his nest, there might be a fire at the old spot.

In the year 1810, on the 20th day of the 7th lunar month, there was suddenly a naked boy about 15 years old falling from the night sky at 竹門 Takemon. The boy was a retainer of a 京都安井門跡 Yasui, a samurai from Kyoto. He had climbed 愛宕山 Mount Atago on the 18th. Since it was very hot he had taken off his cloths. Just then an old priest appeared and said he wanted to show him something special. The boy did not remember any more.
But his 足袋 tabi socks were made in Kyoto.

at Asakusa Okura there was a serpent coming out and ate all the rice in the fields. The farmers wanted to install a watchpost for snakes, but another man told them not to. Once this man had been shut in a storehouse for rice and had nothing to drink. A snake came along, took his hand towle and wetted it so that he could suck out the moisture and thus survive.

At 筑後守屋敷 the estate of the regent of Chikugo the 庚申 Koshin deity is venerated on the 7th day of the 4th lunar month.
In the evening they heard the noise of someone falling on the roof. It was the body of a drowned person. They say 火車 the Kasha Demon has dropped it there.

A fox named 熊谷弥惣左ヱ門 Kumagaya Yasuzaemon got caught here in a trap and died.
The shrine was erected in his honor.

Once a daughter was bewitched by the Inari fox from a nearby pond. A priest in a session asked the fox why. The fox said hw wanted to eat manjuu 饅頭 steamed buns and wanted them to be offered at a place where no dog would disturb him. The priest was well versed in the tales of Asakusa and got rid of the bewitchment with a special ritual.

kuchi-ire Inari 口入稲荷 Takadaya 高田屋

This shrine was located in the garden of the former employment agent Takadaya 高田屋 in the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters of Edo.
In 1701 it was relocated in the precincts of 浅草玉姫稲荷 Tamahime Inari Shrine in Asakusa.

Iinuma no tenjin 飯沼の天神 Tenjin from Iinuma in 下総国 Shimosa no kuni (Chiba)

The Temple 浅草報恩寺 Asakusa Hoon-Ji was formerly located in Shimosa no Kuni (now Chiba). When the temple was built, there came an old man listening to the sermon and then told the priest that he was the Tenjin deity from Iinuma. He would care for the priest from now on.
In a dream he told the priest he would make an offering of two koi 鯉 carp. But during the annual festival a large tree fell down and all the carp in the pond were killed by the angry deity.

In Asakusa lived a poor family, making a living by selling vegetables. When the old father got ill, they became even poorer. His son mumbled about the cat, which should be killed and from that day on the cat did not show up any more. The son thought this strange and asked the old man about it. The old man told his son that the cat came every night and lay on the part of his body that was ill. That way he could get some sleep. And soon the ill old man was cured.

This is the only remains of the old estate, even though some of the lots are still in the hands of the original noble family members who seem to be in the hotel business.

yakujin 疫神 Deities of Illness

. Yakubyogami 疫病神 / 厄病神 Deity of Diseases .

In the year 1848 in Autumn, a pandemic was in the city. An old woman from Asakusa was walking with a strange youg woman, who said she had not eaten for some days. The old woman cooked some soba そば buckwheat noodles for her. After the meal the young woman thanked her and said she was in reality ekijin 疫神 the Deity of Disease. She instructed the old woman that if she would feel ill, she should soon eat some dojoo どじょう loach to get better soon.

There was an epidemic in the village 宝木塚村 Hogizuka with many dead people. The reason was the missing faith in a protecting deity - or so they said. Finally they got a deity from 第六天神社 DairokuTen Jinja Shrine in Asakusa and the epidemy stopped.

. hebi 蛇と伝説 Legends about snakes and serpents .
The tutelary deity of the Temple 竜門寺 Ryumon-Ji was a dragon.
Once the stone wall of the temple collapses and when people came to check, they found a serpent coming out. They chased the animal and killed it. The man who had killed the serpent died the same night. The others became very ill for about two months.
The serpent was rather thick and had four legs. The body is preserved at the temple Keiyo-Ji in Asakusa.
