In the year 1810, there was a temple of the Ikko sect 高田派一向宗, where a stork had put up his nest. Until then the stork had put up his nest at the temple 西福寺 Saifuku-Ji. In the same year in December, there was a fire and the temple Saifuku-Ji burned down. They say if a stork moves his nest, there might be a fire at the old spot.

In the year 1810, on the 20th day of the 7th lunar month, there was suddenly a naked boy about 15 years old falling from the night sky at 竹門 Takemon. The boy was a retainer of a 京都安井門跡 Yasui, a samurai from Kyoto. He had climbed 愛宕山 Mount Atago on the 18th. Since it was very hot he had taken off his cloths. Just then an old priest appeared and said he wanted to show him something special. The boy did not remember any more.
But his 足袋 tabi socks were made in Kyoto.

at Asakusa Okura there was a serpent coming out and ate all the rice in the fields. The farmers wanted to install a watchpost for snakes, but another man told them not to. Once this man had been shut in a storehouse for rice and had nothing to drink. A snake came along, took his hand towle and wetted it so that he could suck out the moisture and thus survive.

At 筑後守屋敷 the estate of the regent of Chikugo the 庚申 Koshin deity is venerated on the 7th day of the 4th lunar month.
In the evening they heard the noise of someone falling on the roof. It was the body of a drowned person. They say 火車 the Kasha Demon has dropped it there.

A fox named 熊谷弥惣左ヱ門 Kumagaya Yasuzaemon got caught here in a trap and died.
The shrine was erected in his honor.

Once a daughter was bewitched by the Inari fox from a nearby pond. A priest in a session asked the fox why. The fox said hw wanted to eat manjuu 饅頭 steamed buns and wanted them to be offered at a place where no dog would disturb him. The priest was well versed in the tales of Asakusa and got rid of the bewitchment with a special ritual.

This shrine was located in the garden of the former employment agent Takadaya 高田屋 in the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters of Edo.
In 1701 it was relocated in the precincts of 浅草玉姫稲荷 Tamahime Inari Shrine in Asakusa.

Iinuma no tenjin 飯沼の天神 Tenjin from Iinuma in 下総国 Shimosa no kuni (Chiba)

The Temple 浅草報恩寺 Asakusa Hoon-Ji was formerly located in Shimosa no Kuni (now Chiba). When the temple was built, there came an old man listening to the sermon and then told the priest that he was the Tenjin deity from Iinuma. He would care for the priest from now on.
In a dream he told the priest he would make an offering of two koi 鯉 carp. But during the annual festival a large tree fell down and all the carp in the pond were killed by the angry deity.

In Asakusa lived a poor family, making a living by selling vegetables. When the old father got ill, they became even poorer. His son mumbled about the cat, which should be killed and from that day on the cat did not show up any more. The son thought this strange and asked the old man about it. The old man told his son that the cat came every night and lay on the part of his body that was ill. That way he could get some sleep. And soon the ill old man was cured.

In the year 1848 in Autumn, a pandemic was in the city. An old woman from Asakusa was walking with a strange youg woman, who said she had not eaten for some days. The old woman cooked some soba そば buckwheat noodles for her. After the meal the young woman thanked her and said she was in reality ekijin 疫神 the Deity of Disease. She instructed the old woman that if she would feel ill, she should soon eat some dojoo どじょう loach to get better soon.

There was an epidemic in the village 宝木塚村 Hogizuka with many dead people. The reason was the missing faith in a protecting deity - or so they said. Finally they got a deity from 第六天神社 DairokuTen Jinja Shrine in Asakusa and the epidemy stopped.

. hebi 蛇と伝説 Legends about snakes and serpents .
The tutelary deity of the Temple 竜門寺 Ryumon-Ji was a dragon.
Once the stone wall of the temple collapses and when people came to check, they found a serpent coming out. They chased the animal and killed it. The man who had killed the serpent died the same night. The others became very ill for about two months.
The serpent was rather thick and had four legs. The body is preserved at the temple Keiyo-Ji in Asakusa.

The wife of 河野通直 Kano Michinao (1564 - 1587), Lord of 伊予国 Io no Kuni, was bewitched and became two women. Nobody knew who was the real one. While eating her ears would begin to move, so they torured her to find out. And indeed, an old fox appeared in her place. When they tried to kill it. all the foxes from the Shikoku region came along.
They said this fox was the messenger 貴狐明神 of 稲荷 Inari and the master of all foxes in Japan. If they would not kill her, the foxes would leave Shikoku and do no more harm.
Michinao believed them and let the fox go. All the other foxes also left Shikoku.

The father of 藤田スイ氏 Fujita Sui, 藤原金次郎 Fujiwara Kinjiro, was nuimono no shishoo 縫物の師匠 a famous craftsman for sewing. He went with two companions to トウドウさん／東堂山 Mount Todo San (668 m) and on their way home they took chikamichi 近道 a shortcut. They were wearing fashionable scarlet coats. On the way they sat down to have a smoke.
They saw a kitsunebi 狐火 fox fire appearing and disappearing, coming and going. They looked at it for a a while with enjoyment and then went home.
The family members told them they were smelling of shit. Their scarlet coats were full of fox shit.

Norikoshi is almost like a kagebooshi 影法師 Kageboshi, the full shadow of a person.
First the bold head of a priest becomes visible. Because it is not clear, people look closer. and it becomes bigger and biger, going over a roof. Then it comes down down again.
In the village 土淵村 Tsuchibuchi mura there lived kajiya 鍛冶屋 a blacksmith named 権蔵 Gonzo. One evening he came back to the house of his shishoo 師匠 teacher when he saw a man peeking at the daughter. He seemed huge like a rock and then shrinking rapidly. He soon jumped over the roof and disappeared.

Toogoro kitsune 藤五郎狐 a fox named Togoro
On the border along 桃生村 Momou village and 中津山村 Nakatsuyama village there is a bridge over the river 古川 Furukawa called the 八景橋 Hakkeibashi. Around there lived an old fox called 藤五郎 Togoro. The used to bewitch travelers. Once shishimai no takumi 獅子舞の師匠 a mentor of the lion dance from Nakatsuyama village named 勘作 Kansaku with his troupe was invited to a village in Nagano and had to cross this bridge. It was evening already and there was a large estate inviting them to stay. They danced all night and got a lot of presents for it. The next morning when they came to 谷地 Yachi near the bridge, they found that all their presents had gone.
This was the wicked deed of the fox Togoro.

In the middle of 神野山 Mount Konoyama there was koedame 肥溜め an area for fertilizer. A student of 狂言 Kyogen passed here one night and was bewitched by a fox. He undressed and went into the dump all nakes, thinking a peace of shit was soap and smeared it all over his body. Other people passing by begun to laugh and he finally came back to his senses.

She could contact the spirit of a dead person and answer questions from the family.

In Nanba lives a strange man who worked in the fields. He would get half naked, show his stomach and if someone shot at him, he was never hit.
Once a group of skilled hunters with their 師匠 master and asked the master to shoot at the man. The master hit the target and the man died. When the students asked how he did it, he said this man was in fact a fox and he had shot at the robes the fox in disguise was wearing.
Later they found the fox, who was shot dead.

Near 見付 Mitsuke there is a pond called Sakuragaike 桜が池 "The Cherry Blossom Pond".
皇円 Saint Koen (1074 - 1169), the mentor of 法然 Saint Honen, meditated here waiting for 弥勒 Miroku Bosatsu to come back the earth, trying to become a serpent that would never die. When he was about to die, he jumped into the pond and became a serpent.

What Really Happens in the Kyōgen Backstage

This material offers explanations mainly through picture on the tools and works, which were used for backstage devices of Kabuki. This helps us to learn about dramaturgy of Kabuki, including stage sets and theater properties.

With the growing popularity of ghost story-related plays since the Bunka and Bunsei periods (1804-1830), the large scale devices were developed by Hasegawa Kanpei, a professional set designer/producer, who handled all the stage sets at three officially recognized Kabuki theaters of Edo. This page is one of the scenes of "Imoseyama Onna Teikin" and describes the devise of "takiguruma (waterfalls wheels)" that expresses the Yoshino River. Usually, pale blue cloth is used to express the flow of a river. In this play, however, this devise was used to make it appear as if the water flew from the back of the stage to the audience seats.
In addition, this work includes the burning lantern entrance (chōchin nuke), the revolving door panel (toita gaeshi), the garden lantern entrance (tōrō nuke) of "Ghost Story at Yotsuya on the Tōkaidō", and the disclosure of a trick for a midair stunt feat of Ishikawa Goemon. The books for trick disclosure were a popular project to satisfy the curiosity of the audience, and many other books based on similar ideas were also published.

kamanari 釜鳴 the kettle makes auspicious noises
A 刀鍛冶 sword smith named 国員 Kunikazu wanted to make mochi 餅　rice cakes for the New Year at the end of December, when suddenly his kama 釜 kettle begun to make auspicious noises. Since then Kunikazu became famous.
If a kettle makes noises the family will become prosperous. Kunikazu changed his name store name to
Kamanariya 釜鳴屋.

. saru 猿と伝説 Legends about monkeys - Affen .
A ship carrying Kyogen actors from a tour to Yamaguchi became shipwrecked and the people, rescued on land, did not know where they are. There were no human houses on the island. But the monkeys on the island found the humans and many came to the beach to look at them. Since it was a ship carrying actors, the monkeys asked them for a performance of a 狂言 Kyogen. So one of them danced 三番叟 the Sanbaso. The monkeys liked that very much and threw some food at them. Then they climbed on a high tree and showed the actors the direction. When the actors started rowing that way, they finally reached 長門国 the Nagato province.

In a Kyogen performance for 節分 Setsubun rituals in Spring, an Oni 鬼 demon comes from Horaijima Island. He is tricked by a woman who snatches his kakuremino 隠れ蓑 straw raincoat (which makes him invisible). Then she throws Setsubun ritual beans at him to drive him out.

The legend of Hakuzōsu became a Kyōgen play "Fishing for a fox", 釣狐 Tsurigitsune (‘Fox Trapping’) / Konkai (‘The Cry of the Fox’)
In Tsurigitsune, an old fox who has lost all of his relatives to a hunter's trap assumes human form to try to convince the hunter to stop killing. In this story, a hunter is visited by his uncle, the priest Hakuzōsu, who lectures his nephew on the evils of killing foxes. The hunter is nearly convinced, but after the priest departs, he hears the cry of the fox and realizes it wasn't his uncle at all but a fox in guise.
The fox resumes his natural form and reverts to his wild ways, takes the bait in a trap and is captured.

Hakuzosu was a strong believer in 稲荷神 the Inari fox deity.
One day he found a fox with three legs. He thought this was a present of the deity and he brought it up with great care.
The fox became a wise animal and helped the priest to forecast disaster and bad luck.
The staff of the priest used in the Kyogen performance is made of bamboo taken from the bamboo grove at 少林寺 the temple Shorin-Ji.

. Inari 稲荷と伝説 Legends about the Fox Deity .
The rikishi 力士 Sumo wrestlers from Sasayama always lost a bout when the Shogun came to look, but this time they all won.
When the lord of the domain, 青山忠裕 Aoyama Tadahiro, came back to his estate in Edo, the wrestlers had already left and went back home to Hyogo.
These wrestlers had been the Inari foxes from a shrine in the domain.
To show his gratitude, Tadahiro ordered special flags and ema 絵馬 votive tablets.
- The Inari Foxes from 王地山 / 王子山 Ojisan (Ojiyama) sometimes went to war and one fox looked like 1000 men to help winning.
- If the Inari fox howls, there will be a fire.

Yoshimori no to 義盛の塔 the memorial tower of Yoshimori
Once the memorial tower was crying every night, begging to be brought back to 濱谷 Hamadani. So finally they brought it back to where it belonged.

伊勢三郎義盛の供養塔（西浜谷）
篠山産業高校の西北方山麓の集落が西浜谷で、太古に篠山盆地が湖であったころ、浜辺であった名残の地名であろう。西北部の一段高い所に「毘沙門堂」があり、その奥へ１００メートルほど入った竹藪の中の台地に、源義経の四天王の一人、「伊勢三郎義盛の供養塔」という宝篋印塔（町・文）がある。高さ１．５９メートル、中輪の正面に梵字が刻まれているだけで無銘であるが、室町期かそれ以前の作である。ここには、もと湧泉（遊仙）山福応寺があった。
伊勢三郎義盛は伊勢国に生まれ、上野国で義経の家来となり、一字をもらったとされる。義盛は各地で奮戦し、文治元年（１１８５）には壇ノ浦の合戦の後、平宗盛・清宗父子を京へ護送している。
義経は、兄頼朝と不仲となり堀川の館を出た後、文治５年に奥州衣川館の戦いで自刃するまで、約３年間消息不明の期間がある。当地出身の鷲尾三郎経春のつてで、このうち相当長期にわたって三岳修験者たちに隠まわれていたとし、その間に三郎は亡くなったとも、鈴鹿山で自殺したとも、義経とともに北国落ちして、衣川で討死にしたともいう。いずれにしても、なじみの里で供養したのだろうと伝えられている。
昔、なぜか徴兵逃れや戦死除けにお陰があると参詣者が多く、奉納した幟が何本も立っていた

Ise Saburo was one of the four attendants of the prince Yoshitsune. While Yoshitsune himself was considered an expert in ninjutsu, Ise no Saburo Yoshimori was in fact one of the leaders of shinobi bands near Ueno region. Depicted in many theater plays and renowned by Yoshitsune Monogatari, Yoshimori represents an example of a devoted samurai vassal, yet also skilled in ninjutsu.
It is considered that Ise Saburo had been born in Zairyo or Iga – a place in Ueno area, whence the pronunciation of his name as ‘Saburo’ comes; another name of his was Yakeshita Koroku. Yoshitsune Monogatari says that Yoshimori clan came from some other place and faithfully served the Minamoto clan. But Ise Saburo, raised without a father, headed a band of bandits, laying claim to ‘his’ territory – upland near Iga.
However, after meeting Yoshitsune,
Ise Saburo returned to serving his lord, just as his ancestors did. His loyalty and martial skills made him one of the prince Minamoto’s first generals. But that fact doesn’t understate his combat skills – in battle Ise Saburo demonstrated remarkable techniques, killing and capturing enemies no less than any other of Yoshitsune favorites did. His skill in using the ‘bear paw’ (kumade, a special instrument used by ninja and other warriors as a grappling iron or hook) is mentioned. Ise no Saburo Yoshimori faced his death together with his brothers-in-arms, protecting their lord in a last stand. Being severely wounded, he could not continue the fight and committed ritual suicide.
Yet his wisdom and knowledge did not pass by the succeeding generations. A collection of poems (tanka) on ninjutsu and ninja strategy supposedly authored by him has remained. As these were collected 500 years after his death it is doubtful that he truly wrote them. A few of them were included in Bansenshukai ninja manual under the title ‘A Hundred Poems About The Ninja’.

Harima Province (播磨国, Harima no kuni) or Banshū (播州)
was a province of Japan in the part of Honshū that is the southwestern part of present-day Hyōgo Prefecture. Harima bordered on Tajima, Tanba, Settsu, Bizen, and Mimasaka Provinces. Its capital was Himeji.
During the Edo period, the Akō Domain (fief) was part of Harima. The Forty-seven rōnin were samurai of Akō han. IHI Corporation, a shipbuilder and major Boeing engine subcontractor gets its name from the province.

Harima Province was established in 7th century. During the Meiji Restoration, Himeji Prefecture was established with the whole area of Harima Province as the territory. Himeji Prefecture was renamed to Shikama prefecture, and Shikama Prefecture was transferred to Hyōgo Prefecture finally.
Iwa jinja 伊和神社 was the chief Shinto shrine (ichinomiya) of Harima.

Bizen Province (備前国, Bizen no kuni)
was a province of Japan on the Inland Sea side of Honshū, in what is today the southeastern part of Okayama Prefecture. It was sometimes called Bishū (備州 Bishu), with Bitchū and Bingo Provinces. Bizen borders Mimasaka, Harima, and Bitchū Provinces.
Bizen's original center was in the modern city of Okayama. From an early time Bizen was one of Japan's main centers for sword smithing.

In the 3rd month of the 6th year of the Wadō era (713), the land of Bizen-no kuni was administratively separated from Mimasaka Province (美作国). In that same year, Empress Genmei's Daijō-kan continued to organize other cadastral changes in the provincial map of the Nara period.
In Wadō 6, Tanba Province (丹波国) was sundered from Tango Province (丹後国); and Hyūga Province (日向国) was divided from Ōsumi Province (大隈国).
In the Muromachi period,
Bizen was ruled by the Akamatsu clan from Mimasaka, but by the Sengoku period the Urakami clan had become dominant and settled in Okayama city. They were later supplanted by the Ukita clan, and Ukita Hideie was one of the regents Toyotomi Hideyoshi appointed for his son. After Kobayakawa Hideaki helped Tokugawa Ieyasu to win the Battle of Sekigahara over Ukita and others, he was granted Ukita's domains in Bizen and Mimasaka.
Bizen passed through a variety of hands during the Edo period before being incorporated into the modern prefecture system.

桂蔵坊 Keizobo was an old fox that lived close to the Tottori castle. He could run to Edo and back in just two days and was famous for his speed. The Lord Ikeda 池田 of the Castle was very fond of him.
One day Keizobo was sent on a secret mission to Edo and passing 播磨国 Harima no Kuni (Hyogo), he passed a trap of a farmer, who had placed a delicious-smelling fried rat. Since he was on an urgent mission, he passed on. On his way back from Edo he was hungry and wanted to get the rat, but in turn got caught in the trap himself and was killed.
Lord Ikeda grieved about his friend and had the shrine 中坂神社 Nakazaka Jinja built in his honor.

When his mother asked about his problem. He told her all and the ladies stopped appearing.

If a child has kan 癇 epilepsy, the mother puts a piece of paper with the word 鬼 demon written three times in its hand. Then she recites a Buddhist spell three times:

A Samurai from Bizen no Kuni named 水野義風 Mizuno Gifu was ordered by the village head to write a Waka poem as a rain ritual.
The villagers were happy, took a copy home and offered it to the 産土神 Ubusunagami, And the rain came soon.
So to our day when there is a drought, they take out this paper and perform rituals. Then it will rain.

According to the geographer 古川古松軒 Furukawa Koshoken, who was born in Bizen no Kuni,
in the year 1797 in 備前国 Bizen in 児嶋 / 児島 Kojima 榧原 Kayahara, a rich farmer had ishigaki 石垣 a large stone wall built around his estate. From two large stones there were two round balls coming out.
The big one looked as if a white powder was painted around it. When placed into a dark room, one could almost read a book.
