Nihonbashihakozakicho

This district is closely related to the Shrine 富岡八幡宮 Tomioka Hachimangu on the other side of the river 隅田川 Sumidagawa.
And this Hachimangu has close ties to 筑前国筥崎宮 the Shrine Hakozaki no Miya in Chikuzen (now Fukuoka).
In olden times there was a pond named 箱崎池 Hakozaki Ike in this district.

Around 1640 the land was reclaimed along the river Sumidagawa and in the North were 箱崎町一・二丁目 Hakozaki-cho first and second district, in the West 北新堀町 Kita-Niihori-cho.
In 1665 船見番所 a lookout for ships was built and it became the center of the river transportation.

Around 1690, the younger brother of the rich lumber dealer 奈良屋茂左衛門 Naraya Mozaemon (Nara-Mo) named 安左衛門 Yasuemon erected a row of strong fireproof kura yashiki 蔵屋敷 warehouse living quarters.
In 1698, the bridge 永代橋 Eitaibashi was constructed and even more business concentrated here.
In 1740, the Kurayashiki were bought by 三井家 the Mitsui Family.

In 1827, the area of the former samurai residences was called 箱崎町三・四丁目 Hakozaki third and fourth sub -district.

In 1976, 日本橋北新堀町 Kita-Niihori-cho and 日本橋箱崎町 Hakozaki-cho became just one sub-district, the present-day 日本橋箱崎町.

The streets of modern Hakozakicho are lined with office buildings.

in Nihonbashi-Hakozaki-cho, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Japan, is IBM's largest building in Japan, in terms of the number of people working there. It mainly houses IBM's marketing and market support departments, and, since October 2009, headquarters, which moved from Roppongi, Tokyo.
It was built for IBM in 1989.
IBM Hakozaki Facility is located at 19-21 Nihonbashi-Hakozaki-cho, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, on the right bank of the Sumida River. It houses mainly IBM's marketing and systems engineering departments, and is IBM's largest facility in Japan, in terms of the number of people working there. It is one of the three great festivals in Fukuoka.

Hakozaki Shrine was founded in 923, with the transfer of the spirit of the deity Hachiman from Daibu Hachiman Shrine in what is Honami Commandry, Chikuzen Province in Kyūshū.
The annual Tamaseseri Festival (January 3) and the
Hojoya-e Festival (September 12–18) attract many to visit the shrine.

The regular fair at 箱崎町の金毘羅 the Konpira Shrine is held on the 10th day instead of the 9th day, as usual.
This is seen as one of the seven wonders of the area.

松五郎 Matsugoro who lived in Hakozaki, Date city, was fond of horses, but when he was 20 years old, he died. He was burried at a place war away from his home.
At that night, the horse he had fondled most, begun to neigh like crazy and run away from the horse shed. The others followed it as it gallopped toward the grave of Matsugoro. There were just in time to find a thief trying to steal things from the grave and they captured him.
This was the way of the horse to show its greatfulness toward Matsugoro.

Horie district

Horiechoo, Horie choo 堀江町 Horie Cho district
Kobunachoo 小舟町 Kobunacho, Kobuna Cho district ("small boat")

Located in the South of 江戸川区南部 Edogwa district, 葛西地域 Kasai area.
The name has been used until 1932 and later (1979) became part of the Kasai area.

When Tokugawa Ieyasu came to Edo, there a lot of fishermen in this are, one of them was
Horie Rokuroo 堀江六郎　Horie Rokuro.
Ieyasu allowed him to use his name for the area and provide fish and seafood for the fast-growing city.

It is a narrow long district, next to 小舟町 Kobunacho, sandwiched between two waterways.
In the East is 東堀留川 Higashi-Horidomegawa , in the West 伊勢町川 Isechogawa. (These waterways do not exist any more.)

with Shiokashi 塩河岸 "Salt river bank" and Komekashi 米河岸 "Rice river bank".

Because of this good access by boat, there were many storehouses. They stored
木材 lumber, 米 rice, 塩 salt, 乾物 dried food items, 、鰹節 Bonito flakes, 海草 seaweed, 線香 incense, 麻 hemp, 下駄 geta clogs.

Edo Meisho Zue 江戸名所図会

There were also many craftsmen and dealers for uchiwa 団扇 hand fans (the air-conditioning for summer in Edo).
So Horie was soon identified with the hand fans.

Two districts in the middle of Horie were also called
Terefurechoo 照降町 (てれふれ) Terefurecho, Terefure Cho
(district where it rains (fure) and shines (tere))
The Japanese is also given as （てりふりちょう ) Terifuricho.
since they made umbrellas, raincoats and hand fans, useful items for any weather and the roads were always busy with customers.

The haiku poet Takarai Kikaku 宝井其角 and Hattori Ransetsu 服部嵐雪 also lived in the back quarters of てれふれ町足駄屋 a Geta shop in Terefure Cho.

Kobunachoo 小舟町 Kobunacho, Kobuna Cho district ("small boat")

The district had three sub-districts, 一丁目 till　三丁目.
At the time of the urban demarcations applied in 1603, this area was known as. Shimofunecho. However, in 1720, its name was changed to Kobunacho to distinguish it from 大舟町 Obunacho, which lay to the west.
(Ofunacho was eventually re-named to 本舟町 Hon-Funacho "the Real Funacho".)
It was a district with fishermen and shipping agents.
Traces of the old capital of Edo still linger in Kobuna-cho, Nihonbashi.
It was connected via the waterways to the bridges Edobashi and Nihonbashi.

小伝馬町→小舟町天王 Tenno Festival Float from Kobunacho - Kodenmacho
Around 1711 there was an epidemy in Kobunacho and they might have borowed the float from the Tenno Shrine for the festifal 天王おまつり.
It seems the festival float was carried around parts along Nihonbashi and Uogashi, where the fish mongers lived and sometimes called
sanjuri Tenno 十三里天王 Tenno of 30 ri distance
(1 里 RI is about 3.9 km).

Looking after the giant lantern dedicated to Sensoji Temple in Asakusa is one way of carrying on tradition. Sensoji Temple has a giant lantern at Kaminarimon Gate and at Hozomon Gate, but the giant lantern hung at Hozomon Gate dedicated by Nihonbashi Kobunacho has a longer history.
It is said that religious followers from around the waters by the fish market at Nihonbashi dedicated it in 1657 as a sign of their faith. By the way, the dedicating of the giant lantern at Kaminarimon Gate was started by the “god of management” Konosuke Matsushita; founder of the leading Japanese home appliance manufacturer Panasonic, and the company continues to look after it to this day.
The giant lantern is 3.9 meters in height. It is also 2.7 meters in circumference so it takes two fully-grown adults to encircle it hand-in-hand. A new one will be dedicated this year for the first time in eleven years. It will cost five to six million yen as Kyoto is the only place where a lantern this size can be made. It will be unveiled at a festival at Yakumo Shrine in September with help from the townspeople, companies, and those who have a fondness for Nihonbashi Kobunacho. It is then scheduled to be dedicated to Sensoji Temple on October 5.

Nihonbashi Kobunacho in the 1950’s, it was still quite reminiscent of the “bonito riverbank” during the Edo period. As its name suggests, the area was lined with dried bonito*1 wholesalers and in the daytime, you could see mats everywhere with bonito on them being dried under the sun. When aged bonito is scraped with a brush, you could see powder flying everywhere, spreading the smell of dried bonito.
Nihonbashi Kobunacho is where Zenjiro Yasuda, founder of one of Japan’s megabanks, Mizuho Financial Group, started his dried bonito wholesaling / money changing business.
There is a legend stating that he started it when he found a golden Ebisu (god of fishing and fortune) statue. The Kobunacho Branch of Mizuho Bank currently stands where Zenjiro set up his business and its staff helps us out every year during festivities such as a kagami-biraki ceremony in January. The placing of importance on connections with the area not only by its residence but also by companies based here is another fine tradition of Nihonbashi.

Murata Harumi 村田春海　(1746 - 1812)
was born in Kobunacho.

He was the second son of a fish dealer in Kobunacho.
He was a scholar of 国学 Kokugaku (National Learning) and also a poet, disciple of Kamo no Mabuchi and Hattori Chuei, Udono Shinei and Minagawa Kien.
When his older brother died, he took over the family fish business and spent his money lavishly.
Eventually all his money was spent and the family business ruined.
He still used his knowledge of Kokugaku to work with Katō Chikage and Matsudaira Sadanobu.
His most important books:

Kaore Gorge is a 0.5 km gorge along the Kaore Kaido road and the Otogawa River in the northern part of Sakuragata Town in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. It is a scenic spot where you can enjoy seasonal changes in the scenery including cherry blossoms in early spring, Koinobori (carp streamers) in May, tender green in summer and crimson foliage in fall.
Especially beautiful is the cherry blossom season,
when the entire gorge is colored pale pink by about 80 Somei Yoshino cherry trees. From April through May, about 200 carp streamers are set out over the upstream of the river, which create a wonderful landscape. In summer, you can enjoy forest bathing in brilliant fresh green together with refreshing sound of clear water and fresh air.
The best hiking season is from the middle of November to early December, when the gorge is surrounded with beautiful autumn leaves.

愛知県岡崎市桜形町般興

In summer, the Gorge becomes popular amongst bathers wishing to make the most of the clear air and fresh spring water.

About 7 km long.

全長約７ｋｍに及ぶ断崖の渓谷。神秘的な秘境を高さ２０ｍの橋から覗き込むと、まるで吸い込まれてしまいそう。渓谷に響く水の音に聞き入りながら、一周４０分程度の遊歩道を散策するのも◎ 落差８０ｍもある滝は下部に虹が見えることも。「飛騨美濃紅葉三十三選」にも選出された紅葉は、色鮮やかな木々と渓谷の荒々しさのコントラストが見ものです。

In the river Fuefukigawa there were two hollows and then from Mitomi the lumber was transported downriver.
If anything fell into the hollow, it was lost to the deep bottom.
To prevent things from getting lost, people made offerings of sakedaru 酒1樽 one barrel of sake rice wine and sekihan 赤飯 one dish of auspicious red rice to the Suijin 水神 Deity of Water.
The barrels and rice were bound together strongly and placed into the hollow in the evening. Next morning they would float empty on the water.

Kobo Daishi Kukai 弘法大師
Once upon a time,
弘法大師 Kobo Daishi was in 川浦地方 the Kawaura region and begged an old woman for some kayu 粥 rice gruel made with 粟 millet.
The old woman said she had kept some ヤマメ Yamame trout in the gruel and it tasted unpleasant, so she could not give it to him. Kobo Daishi said if she would let the fish back into the river, they will come back to life. When the old woman threw the boiled 山女魚 Yamame into the river, they came back to life and swam away with the rice gruel still on their bodies.
Since that time, the Yamame in the river 笛吹川 Fuefukigawa have some spots like millet grains on their body.

Awa Kaido 阿波街道 Awa Highway

Awa no kuni 阿波国 Awa province, is the old name for the Northern parts of Tokushima prefecture.

The 阿讃山脈 Sanuki Mountain range lies on the border of 香川県 Kagawa and 徳島県 Tokushima.
There are various tooge 峠 passes for crossing of the highway:
大坂峠 Osaka Toge, 鵜の田尾峠 Unotao Toge, 境目 Sakaime. 猪ノ鼻峠 Inohana Toge.

In the former 讃岐国 Sanuki no Kuni (now Kagawa) the highway was called Awa Kaido.
In Tokushima, the highway was called 讃岐街道 Sanuki Kaido.

In Tokushima on this highway was a town called 阿波町 Awacho, with more than 200 m along the road.
- The modern city of Awa was established on April 1, 2005, from the merger of the former town of Awa, absorbing the town of Ichiba, and the towns of Donari and Yoshino.

In Tadotsu town in Kagawa was the famous Konpira Shrine and the roads for this pilgrimage were called
金毘羅街道 Konpira Kaido / 金毘羅往来 Konpira Orai.

Imabari Kaido 今治街道 Imabari Highway

It leads from Saijō 西条 Saijo along the coast of the 高縄半島 Takanawa Hanto Peninsula to Imabari city, Ehime,
about 90 km.
Saijo was especially active as the entrance city for the mountain pilgrimage to 石鎚山 Ishizuchisan.
西条 Saijo was also very close to 松山市 Matsuyama city.

Imabari is the last station of the しまなみ海道　Shimanami Kaido , about 60 km, from Honshu to Shikoku.
Nishiseto Expressway, often called the Shimanami Kaidō, connecting Onomichi, Hiroshima and Imabari.

The Kaido crossed the pass 三坂峠 Misaka Toge, then via 久万 Kuma and 七鳥 Nanatori into Kochi prefecture.
In Kochi via 池川 Ikegawa, 大崎 Osaki and 佐川 Sakawa to the city of Kochi.

- Also called 土佐北街道 Tosa Kita Kaido, Northern Kaido
From Kawanone in Ehime via 新宮、馬立 and the pass 笹ヶ峰峠 to Kochi.
In Kochi via 大豊町立川（たぢかわ）the Tachikawa river in Otoyo、本山町 Motoyama and a few more towns to the castle of Kochi.
This road has been in use since 707 as 北山官道 Kitayama Kando, a road for the local governor.
In the Edo period it was used by the Daimyo of Tosa for the regular visits to Edo.
There was also a shortcut to the Konpira Shrine.

In Tokushima via 立江 Tatsue and 羽ノ浦 Hanoura, crossing the river 那賀川 Nakagawa at 古庄 Furusho, passing 桑野 Kuwano, 由岐 Yuki, 日和佐 Hiwasa and 宍喰浦 Shishikuiura.
In Kochi via 甲浦 Kannoura , 室戸 Muroto, 安芸 Aki, 赤岡 Akaoka and more towns.
Most is the modern national road Nr. 55.

A sea route until 橘 Tachibana, from there along the river 桑野川 Kuwanogawa. From 鷲敷 Wajiki along the river 那賀川 Nakagawa.
After crossing the Yotsuashi Pass to Kochi, along the river 物部川 Monobegawa to 大栃 Odochi, 美良布 Birafu,
山田 Yamada and 後免 Gomen, reaching Kochi.
(Now there is a long tunnel of 1857 m below the pass.)

Fron Kochi (Tosa no kuni) vial the Southern Sea Road to 須崎 Susaki, 窪川 Kubokawa to 中村 Nakamura town.

In Susaki was a turn to the
Yusuhara Kaido 檮原街道 Yusuhara Highway
In Ehime from 北宇和郡鬼北町 Kihoku town in the Kita-Uwa district to the 大洲街道 Ozu Kaido.
Then South to 宇和島 Uwajima.
A lot of 鰹 Katsuo bonito fish from Tosa was transported via this road.

Some say it was the escape road that 坂本龍馬 Sakamoto Ryoma took when leaving his home domaine in 1862.

Marugame Kaido 丸亀街道 Marugame Highway

Marugame was a harbour city in Kagawa, reached in the Edo period by pilgrims for the Konpira Shrine / Kotohira Shrine in about 3 long days on a ship from Osaka.
From the harbour it took about 14 km along the Marugame Kaido to the Shrine.

Muya Kaido 撫養街道 Muya Highway
Also called 淡路街道 Awaji Kaido.
Muya is the old name of 鳴門市 Naruto city, Tokushima.

In the Edo period this road was maintained by the Daimyo 藩主蜂須賀家政 Hachisuka Iemasa (1558 - 1639).
It took about 67 km from Muya town via 岡崎 Okazaki to 池田 Ikeda, Tokushima.
The road was mostly used for the transportation of indigo, salt, tobacco leaves and lumber.

The town of 撫養町 Muya now belongs to 鳴門市 Naruto city.
Muya was a connected by a sea route to 淡路島 Awaji Island and the harbour towns of 福良 Fukura, 洲本 Sumoto and 由良 Yuura and then again by sea to 紀伊 Kii (Wakayama).

Kawakita (Muya) Kaido 川北(撫養)街道
To the West of Mura Kaido, along the northern shore of the river 吉野川 Yoshinogawa and leading to Ikeda.

Sanuki Kaido 讃岐街道 Sanuki Highway

From Marugame in Sanuki no Kuni along the Northern Shore of Shikoku via 観音寺 Kannonji, 川之江 Kawanoe,
新居浜 Niihama to 小松 Komatsu (now 現西条市 Saijo city).
Saijo was especially active as the entrance city for the mountain pilgrimage to 石鎚山 Ishizuchisan.
西条 Saijo was also very close to 松山市 Matsuyama city.

Tadotsu Kaido 多度津街道 Tadotsu Highway

The Kaido leads from Tadotsu city, Kagawa, to the famous Konpira shrine.
The roads for this pilgrimage were called
金毘羅街道 Konpira Kaido / 金毘羅往来 Konpira Orai.

The martial art of Shorinji Kempo (少林寺拳法) was founded in 1947 by 宗道臣 So Doshin
at the temple Dōryū-ji 道隆寺 Doryu-Ji in Tadotsu.
The temple is Nr. 77 of the Shikoku Henro Pilgrimage.

Upstream is 古石場川 the river Furuishibagawa and merges on the left riverside with 大横川 the river Oyokogawa.

flows in Koto ward.
It was a canal to transport lumber connecting the rivers Oyokogawa and the river 平久川 Heikyugawa.
The lumberyards were later moved and the canal is now part of the park.
