Susaki, Suzaki 洲崎 / 須崎 / 州崎 Susaki district
Koto ward, 東京都江東区東陽一丁目の旧町名 The old name for 東陽一 Higashiyoichi first sub-district

Due to landfill in the early Edo period, this area became known as
深川洲崎十万坪 Fukagawa Susaki Jumantsubo.
It was known for its beautiful scenery.
In 1888, a pleasure quarter from Nezu was moved here.
Until 1958 there was a large pleasure quarter, the 洲崎パラダイス Susaki paradise".

There is also an area called Susaki in 墨田区向島5丁目 the fifth sub-district of Mukojima in Sumida ward, with the spelling 須崎.
Another Susaki 洲崎 is known in 千葉県 Chiba and 神奈川県 Kanagawa.

In the Edo period the river 小名木川 Konagigawa was used for transportation from the Susaki area to the fish markets of Edo.
In 1791, there was a great flooding of the area and many merchants lost their estates. Since then the Bakufu government forbid to build living quarters in Susaki.
The area was always popular for shiohigari 潮干狩り hunting for clams and seafood on the shore

Shrine Susaki Jinja 州崎神社

The Shrine was under the special protection of the mother of 将軍徳川綱吉 Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi.
People came here to pray for protection from water disasters and for good fishing.
The Shrine was on a small island on the beach, thus called
uki-Benten 浮き弁天 the floating Benten shrine

In modern times all this became landfilled and nothing of the atmosphere of Edo is left.

- quote -
Maple season at Takinogawa, Oji, Tokyo, c. 1910.
“A notice of the floral festivals of the year as observed in Japan demands some mention of the maple – for the reddening leaf of the maple, like the foliage of many other blossomless trees, is regarded as a flower in Japan.
“The rich tints of the changing leaves of certain deciduous trees hardly distinguishable from the colouring of blossoming shrubs, such as the azalea, form a favourite object of attraction during the Autumn months. The native term, momiji, which is commonly translated ‘maple’, is, strictly speaking, a general name applied to many trees which redden in the Fall.

“Of the maple itself, there are many varieties distinguished both by the form of their leaves and the tone of their changing colour. No garden is considered complete without its group of such reddening trees, placed beside some artificial hill towards the West, to receive additional splendour from the setting sun.

“… At Ko-no-dai, a famous prominence commanding a view of the whole plain of Tokio, there are some magnificent maple trees noted for their enormous size … About the end of October, in the glen called Taki-no-gawa at Oji, a suburb of Tokio, the slopes of a natural glen between the hills are planted with thick masses of these trees forming a most romantic spot where from the galleries of a rustic arbour the sight of the foliage in all its burning splendour may be enjoyed. Shinagawa and Meguro, other well known spots in the vicinity of the capital, have also good groups of maples which attract many sight seers. Picnicking and mushroom gathering are pastimes which accompany the viewing of the maple.

“In the poems and pictures of the country, the maple is associated with deer:
How full of sorrow seems the Autumn! when
In solitary rambles slowly straying,
Amid the russet foliage of the glen,
I listen to the lonely stag’s sad baying.”

The young priest died from this curse.
The top part of the serpent dragon head flowed all the way to a temple in 中野 Nakano.
The lower of the serpent dragon head is kept at the Inokashira Benten.
These bones were used for rain rituals. If it had not rained for a long time, the bones were taken outside in a special ritual - the then rain would fall!

He cut it into eight parts of about ichi joo 1丈 3 m each, hence the name of the island, hachi joo 八丈 Eight Jo.

To appease the sould of the serpent, a sanctuary of Benten was erected.

- quote -
It is a former ward (四谷区 Yotsuya-ku) in the now-defunct Tokyo City.
In 1947, when the 35 wards of Tokyo were reorganized into 23, it was merged with Ushigome ward of Tokyo City and Yodobashi suburban ward of Tokyo-fu to form the modern Shinjuku ward.
- History
Before the growth of Edo, Yotsuya was a farming village outside the city. In 1634, with the digging of the outer moat around Edo Castle, many temples and shrines moved to Yotsuya. The moat had stone walls, and a mitsuke, or watch tower, was also built. Yotsuya Mitsuke stood near the present-day Yotsuya Station.
The relocation of the temples and construction of the mitsuke brought settlements of workers, and following the devastating Meireki fire, many more people moved to Yotsuya, which had been spared. Gradually the area became part of the city of Edo.
In 1695,
the shōgun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi ordered the establishment of a vast dog kennel. The purpose was to board stray dogs as part of his policy of showing mercy to animals. The facility outside the Yotsuya Gate occupied 20,000 tsubo (66,000 m2; 710,000 sq ft).
Yotsuya developed rapidly
due to its central location. In 1894, the Kōbu Railway, predecessor of the present-day Chūō Line, extended its existing railway line between Shinjuku and Tachikawa to Ushigome and opened Yotsuya and Shinanomachi stations. The railway enabled the easy transport of raw materials into the area; soon, pencil, tobacco and other industries moved in and began Yotsuya's rapid industrial development.
Many historic temples and graves are located in Yotsuya.
Among them are Sainen-ji, where the grave of the ninja Hattori Hanzō and his lance are interred.

In 1695, there were so many dogs that Edo began to smell horribly.
An apprentice was even executed because he wounded a dog. Finally, the trouble was taken to a distance, as over 50,000 dogs were deported to kennels in the suburbs of the city where they would be housed.
They were apparently fed rice and fish which were at the expense of the taxpaying citizens of Edo.

- Utagawa Kuniyoshi's portrait of O-Iwa お岩

- quote -
the story of Oiwa and Tamiya Iemon, is a tale of betrayal, murder, and ghostly revenge.
Arguably the most famous Japanese ghost story of all time, it has been adapted for film over 30 times, and continues to be an influence on Japanese horror today.
Written in 1825 by Tsuruya Nanboku IV as a kabuki play,
the original title was Tōkaidō Yotsuya Kaidan (東海道四谷怪談; translation: Ghost Story of Yotsuya in Tokaido). It is now generally shortened, and loosely translates as

Odaiba (お台場) is a large artificial island in Tokyo Bay, Japan, across the Rainbow Bridge from central Tokyo. It was initially built for defensive purposes in the 1850s, dramatically expanded during the late 20th century as a seaport district, and has developed since the 1990s as a major commercial, residential and leisure area. Odaiba, along with Minato Mirai 21 in Yokohama, is among a few manmade seashores in Tokyo Bay where the waterfront is accessible, and not blocked by industry and harbor areas. For artificial sand beaches in the bay, Sea Park in Kanazawa-ku is suitable for swimming, Odaiba has one, and there are two in Kasai Rinkai Park area looking over to the Tokyo Disneyland.
Daiba (台場)
formally refers to one district of the island development in Minato Ward. Shintaro Ishihara used Odaiba to refer to the entire Tokyo Waterfront Secondary City Center (東京臨海副都心 Tōkyō Rinkai Fukutoshin) which includes the Ariake and Aomi districts of Kōtō Ward and the Higashi-Yashio district of Shinagawa Ward.
The name Odaiba comes from a series of six island fortresses constructed in 1853 by Egawa Hidetatsu for the Tokugawa shogunate in order to protect Edo from attack by sea, the primary threat being Commodore Matthew Perry's Black Ships which had arrived in the same year. Daiba in Japanese refers to the cannon batteries placed on the islands.
In 1928, the Dai-San Daiba (第三台場) or "No.3 Battery" was refurbished and opened to the public as the Metropolitan Daiba Park, which remains open to this day.
..... The modern island of Odaiba began to take shape when the Port of Tokyo opened in 1941. .....
..... The area started coming back to life in the late 1990s as a tourist and leisure zone, .....
..... Odaiba is one of the venue locations in the upcoming 2020 Summer Olympics.
The events to be held there under the venue plan include beach volleyball at Shiokaze Park, triathlon and marathon swimming at Odaiba Marine Park, and gymnastics at a new gymnastics venue.

Odaiba, modern town, classic eco-friendly ideas
Located on the shore of Tokyo Bay mainly on reclaimed land, the Odaiba area is one of Tokyo's newest neighborhoods. It is also the capital's newest tourist hotspot, luring over 37 million visitors each year with its modern shopping and entertainment attractions. But this new section of town has roots that go way back: The earth-friendly traditions of the Edo period (1603-1868) are carried on to this day in Odaiba, an area where being kind to the environment is a way of business and life.
..... A Place Both New and Old
..... Taking It Easy on the Earth
..... Centuries of Recycling
In 1603 Tokugawa Ieyasu, who had consolidated his rule over all Japan three years earlier, took up residence in his castle in Edo, making the town Japan's political center. The population of the city grew sharply, and by the early eighteenth century Edo was home to over a million people. But despite its status as one of the world's largest cities, contemporary documents describe this metropolis as a beautiful, trash-free place. Laws forbade the discarding of garbage in rivers. Trash was brought to collection centers located around town and disposed of systematically. This garbage became fertilizer for vegetable fields and made its way back to the tables of Edo inhabitants - a total recycling society of the sort that Odaiba aims to be today.

Sewage systems in old Edo
were the most advanced in the world. Night soil was a valuable commodity, collected by traders who brought it to farmers for use as fertilizer and returned to town with vegetables for sale. There was also a booming market in second-hand goods, with craftsmen gathering old clothes, umbrellas, and such, repairing them, and selling them for reuse; cloth was an especially valuable commodity, and kimonos were taken apart, resewn, and used for generations. This conscientious reuse of goods is yet another practice mirrored in Odaiba today.
Tokyo Bay is today
ringed with "islands of trash" - like Odaiba, reclaimed land built on landfills and developed for industrial or residential use. Soon after the end of the Edo period these shoreline areas were being outfitted with piers for shipping, and in the twentieth century their use as waste-disposal sites was in full swing. Odaiba, today the most popular of these reclaimed shoreline spots, rests atop earth removed from construction sites and the wreckage of old buildings. The town itself is built on a base of recycled material. In more ways than one, recycling is providing the foundation for the boom of the new city center in Odaiba and the new lifestyles that are taking form there. Look closely at the modern bustle of the businesses and pleasure-seekers in Odaiba: You can see a long history of recycling and reusing resources if you know where to look.

Shiodome 汐留 Shiodome district - Minato
shiodome - "keeping the tide out"

Since many salt merchants lived here, it was also written
塩留 Shiodome.

Shinbashi and Shiodomebashi 新橋 - 汐留橋
Shinbashi and Shiodomebashi were two bridges
that spanned the outer moat of Edo Castle's defensive works.
A 暗渠 culvert was subsequently formed when the moat was filled in,
and all that remains of the Shinbashi bridge is a lone pylon with its name inscribed.
The Shiodomebashi bridge was situated to the east of Shinbashi,
it spanning the moat and joining together 木挽町7丁目 Kobiki-chō 7-chōme and 柴口新町 Shibaguchi Shinmachi.

Shiodome (汐留) is an area in Minato, Tokyo, Japan, located adjacent to Shinbashi and Ginza, near Tokyo Bay and the Hamarikyu Gardens. Formerly a railway terminal, Shiodome has been transformed into one of Tokyo's most modern areas. It is a collection of 11 tiny town districts or cooperative zones, but generally there are three main areas:
-- The Shiodome Sio-Site (シオサイト),
a collection of skyscrapers containing mostly businesses, hotels, and restaurants. Its thirteen skyscrapers house the headquarters of All Nippon Airways, Dentsu, Fujitsu, JSR, Mitsui Chemicals, Nippon Express, Nippon Television, Sega Sammy Holdings and Softbank.
-- The western district, located west of the JR tracks and populated by European-style buildings.
-- The southern extension, east of the JR tracks from Hamamatsucho 1-chome. This area is for residential use, and there are three tall apartment buildings located there, along with a small park.
- - - History
Like its neighbors Ginza and Tsukiji, Shiodome is built on what was originally marshland on the shore of Tokyo Bay. Shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu issued an order in 1603 to fill in the area, and throughout the Edo period Shiodome housed the local residences of various daimyōs (feudal lords).
The name Shiodome, which translates to "keeping out the tide", probably referred to the shōgun's desire to isolate Edo Castle (now the Imperial Palace) from Tokyo Bay.
There was a Shiodome River but it has been largely filled in.
