In the year 1810, there was a temple of the Ikko sect 高田派一向宗, where a stork had put up his nest. Until then the stork had put up his nest at the temple 西福寺 Saifuku-Ji. In the same year in December, there was a fire and the temple Saifuku-Ji burned down. They say if a stork moves his nest, there might be a fire at the old spot.

In the year 1813, a man saw a strange woman and followed her. The way led to a graveyard in Imado, where the woman vanished in front of a grave.

In the year 1810, on the 20th day of the 7th lunar month, there was suddenly a naked boy about 15 years old falling from the night sky at 竹門 Takemon. The boy was a retainer of a 京都安井門跡 Yasui, a samurai from Kyoto. He had climbed 愛宕山 Mount Atago on the 18th. Since it was very hot he had taken off his cloths. Just then an old priest appeared and said he wanted to show him something special. The boy did not remember any more.
But his 足袋 tabi socks were made in Kyoto.

. hebi 蛇と伝説 Legends about snakes and serpents .
at Asakusa Okura there was a serpent coming out and ate all the rice in the fields. The farmers wanted to install a watchpost for snakes, but another man told them not to. Once this man had been shut in a storehouse for rice and had nothing to drink. A snake came along, took his hand towle and wetted it so that he could suck out the moisture and thus survive.

At 筑後守屋敷 the estate of the regent of Chikugo the 庚申 Koshin deity is venerated on the 7th day of the 4th lunar month.
In the evening they heard the noise of someone falling on the roof. It was the body of a drowned person. They say 火車 the Kasha Demon has dropped it there.

. Yasuzaemon Inari 弥惣左ヱ門稲荷. .
A fox named 熊谷弥惣左ヱ門 Kumagaya Yasuzaemon got caught here in a trap and died.
The shrine was erected in his honor.

Once a daughter was bewitched by the Inari fox from a nearby pond. A priest in a session asked the fox why. The fox said hw wanted to eat manjuu 饅頭 steamed buns and wanted them to be offered at a place where no dog would disturb him. The priest was well versed in the tales of Asakusa and got rid of the bewitchment with a special ritual.

kuchi-ire Inari 口入稲荷 Takadaya 高田屋

This shrine was located in the garden of the former employment agent Takadaya 高田屋 in the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters of Edo.
In 1701 it was relocated in the precincts of 浅草玉姫稲荷 Tamahime Inari Shrine in Asakusa.

Iinuma no tenjin 飯沼の天神 Tenjin from Iinuma in 下総国 Shimosa no kuni (Chiba)

The Temple 浅草報恩寺 Asakusa Hoon-Ji was formerly located in Shimosa no Kuni (now Chiba). When the temple was built, there came an old man listening to the sermon and then told the priest that he was the Tenjin deity from Iinuma. He would care for the priest from now on.
In a dream he told the priest he would make an offering of two koi 鯉 carp. But during the annual festival a large tree fell down and all the carp in the pond were killed by the angry deity.

In Asakusa lived a poor family, making a living by selling vegetables. When the old father got ill, they became even poorer. His son mumbled about the cat, which should be killed and from that day on the cat did not show up any more. The son thought this strange and asked the old man about it. The old man told his son that the cat came every night and lay on the part of his body that was ill. That way he could get some sleep. And soon the ill old man was cured.

A man who had been ill for a long time went to the temple of his family and asked the priest to be burried there if he would die. The next day he came again and the priest thought this was strange. The priest investigated the case and found that the man had already died.

This used to be the estate shrine of the Tachibana House of the Yanagawa clan, who ruled southern Fukuoka province on the Island of Kyushu. The estate and the shrine was established here around 1660. This is the only remains of the old estate, even though some of the lots are still in the hands of the original noble family members who seem to be in the hotel business.
..... the Torii, the red gate in front of all shrines and holy places, has actually been incorporated into the neighboring building when it was erected, a torii shaped hole has been made in the building wall itself!
No matter how crowded Tokyo gets, you can’t really ask the Gods to move!

yakujin 疫神 Deities of Illness

. Yakubyogami 疫病神 / 厄病神 Deity of Diseases .

In the year 1848 in Autumn, a pandemic was in the city. An old woman from Asakusa was walking with a strange youg woman, who said she had not eaten for some days. The old woman cooked some soba そば buckwheat noodles for her. After the meal the young woman thanked her and said she was in reality ekijin 疫神 the Deity of Disease. She instructed the old woman that if she would feel ill, she should soon eat some dojoo どじょう loach to get better soon.

There was an epidemic in the village 宝木塚村 Hogizuka with many dead people. The reason was the missing faith in a protecting deity - or so they said. Finally they got a deity from 第六天神社 DairokuTen Jinja Shrine in Asakusa and the epidemy stopped.

. hebi 蛇と伝説 Legends about snakes and serpents .
The tutelary deity of the Temple 竜門寺 Ryumon-Ji was a dragon.
Once the stone wall of the temple collapses and when people came to check, they found a serpent coming out. They chased the animal and killed it. The man who had killed the serpent died the same night. The others became very ill for about two months.
The serpent was rather thick and had four legs. The body is preserved at the temple Keiyo-Ji in Asakusa.

Asakusa Kannon 浅草観音 and temple 浅草寺 Senso-Ji, Asakusadera .

Around the year 1802, a country bump came to Edo for sightseeing. After visiting the Asakusa Kannon he then was on his way back home. On the bank of the river he met a very drunk man who attacked him and killed him . . . at least the man lost his conscience and fell to the ground. When he came back to his senses, he felt for the amulet of the Asakusa Kannon, which he had placed into his breast pocket. The imprint of Kannon had disappeared from the paper.
Now he knew that Kannon had taken his place and saved his life.

Kannon 観音 / Kanzeon 観世音

A man named 土師臣中知 Haji no Nakatomo, an official during the Asuka period around 628, came to the Asakusa area. He heard the story of two brothers, 檜熊浜成 Hinokuma Hamashige and 武成 Takenari. They worked as fishermen. One day they fished a statue of Kannon out of the river, but threw it back. At another place in the river they again caught the Kannon statue in their net. Nakatomo realized it was a special statue and venerated it in his home, making it into a temple and he himself became a priet.
But the statue smelled very much like fish, so he used a lot of incense to get rid of the smell.

ubagaike 姥ヶ池 the pond of the old woman

In the old days this unremarkable park with its little pond was shallow marshland that grew smaller and smaller as the city of Edo (old Tokyo) grew around it. In 1891 the local government finally had the marsh filled in and the present day park was put in its place. The name of the pond comes from an old legend concerning a stone pillow housed at a nearby temple.
During the reign of Emperor Yomei (585-587 A.D.), in a place called Asajigahara, there was a small trail connecting Oshu and Shimofusa. It was the only trail in the area and along it there was only a single house, inhabited by an old woman and her beautiful daughter. Any traveler wishing to rest on his journey had to stop over at their house where the old lady would promptly bash his head in with a stone pillow and steal his clothes and belongings. The old lady would then dump the bodies in a nearby pond.
Naturally her daughter was not happy with this and pleaded with the old lady to stop the killings but there was no persuading her. The body count reached 999 and the daughter was desperate to stop the killing.
One day a young man came to stay over and the old lady, as was her habit, took the stone pillow and promptly split his skull open. Upon closer inspection though, the old lady found that she had killed her own daughter who had gone in disguise, hoping that this final sacrifice would persuade the old lady to stop the killings. As the old lady was going mad from the realization of her deeds she took her daughter’s corpse and threw herself and the corpse together into the pond.
Since that day, the pond has been knows as Ubagaike, the Pond of the old Lady

. Legends about Jizo Bosatsu - 地蔵菩薩 .

Around 1760, there lived a priest near the Asakusa Temple, called Arigata Bo ありがた坊 "the thankful priest".
His other name was Rakushin 楽心 (rakuchin . . . to feel at ease), but he was deaf.
He had to make regular prayers at the Jizodoo 地蔵堂 Jizo Hall. When he recited his first prayer, he heard the voice of Jizo callilng him 楽心 Rakushin. Next Jizo called arigatoo gozaimasu 「ありがとうござります」 "thank you very much".
Since then he could hear again and also talk to people.

As the belief in Kannon spread, a man was walking along the Nihonzutsumi embankment when a robber stabbed him. All his money was stolen, but he did not get any wounds. This happened in 1806.

Kaminari-mon gate (Fū-Raijin-mon gate) is situated at the entrance to the grounds of Sensō-ji Temple.
It is said that the original was built in 942 (the fifth year of Tengyō) and located somewhere around Komagata, Taitō Ward.
It is said that Fūjin and Raijin (The gods of wind and thunder) statues were enshrined for the first time when the gate was moved to the current location after the Kamakura period.

In 1877, at the home of the Ohashi family in 浅草仲見世 the Nakamise, Asakusa, for about half a year many weird things happened.
Well, this was a curse that goes back some time.
An ancestor of the Ohashi family was a Samurai attendant of 伝法院 the temple Denbo-In. He had to clear a bamboo grove in the temple compound, where tatari 祟り a curse was lingering. To appease the deity, a small Shrine was erected to appease the angry deity.
As a protector amulet against fire and disaster, the golden statue of a tanuki was erected.

kaechi 替え地 / daigaeshi, daitaichi 代替地 (だいたいち) replacement land

The Edo Bakufu government dedicated areas as daichi to be used for various public purposes.
Many were given to the various districts.
Some 町CHO districts built on this land later were called
Daichimachi 代地町（だいちまち） Daichi-machi.

kaechi 替え地 was land given in exchange to the owner when the land needed to be used for public purposes.
The land was taken from Daimyo yashiki 大名屋敷 estated, temples and shrines. Sometimes even the houses of normal citizens were taken and land given in exchange elsewhere.
Most often land was to be used as hiyokechi 火除地 fire barrier zones.

This district was founded in 1798.
In former times, it was part of 豊島郡野方領牛込村 Toshima district, Nogata, Ushigome village.
In 1797, after a great fire in Edo, it became a daichi 代地 replacement land for 深川六間堀町 Fukagawa Rokkenbori.
In 1798, it was named 深川六間堀町代地牛込岩戸町一～二丁目 Fukagawa Rokkenbori Daichi Ushigome Iwatocho, first and second sub-district.
Around 1675, it was part of 牛込肴町Ushigome Sakanamachi, where yoriki 与力 police inspectors lived. but in 1797, it became a hiyokechi 火除地 fire barrier zone.

Now part of 新宿区岩戸町 Shinjuku, Iwatocho, 神楽坂三、五丁目 Kagurazaka 3rd and 5th sub-district
The name refers to the legend of
. Amanoiwato, Ama no Iwato 天岩戸 cave where Amaterasu Omikami hid .
and the dance of 岩戸神楽 Iwato Kagura.
Around 1830, there were only 32 houses in the first sub-district and 77 in the second.
In 1868, it became part of 江戸府 Edo prefecture.
In 1878, it became part of 東京府牛込区 Tokyo prefecture, Ushigome ward.

The bridge was constructed in 1985 as a part of Sumida Park.
The 169.5-meter long and 6-meter wide pedestrian bridge is built over the Sumida River to connect the Sumida side and the Taito side of Sumida Park. It has a smart design that blends in with the surroundings and is distinguished by a curve in the shape of an x. The design received the Tanaka Award from Japan Society of Civil Engineers in 1989.
Natural stones were used as the base stone and seasonal flowers are planted at the edges. In 1995, A sculpture made by the sculptor, Yoshio Hosoi, based on a design by the nihonga painter, Ikuo Hirayama, was installed on the bridge to celebrate the tenth anniversary of its construction. The more than 1000 cherry blossoms along both banks of the Sumida River can be enjoyed in in the spring and the Sumida River Fireworks Festival in the summer.

歩行者専用橋 a special bridge for pedestrians over the river 日本橋川 Nihonbashigawa.
Conecting 大手町 Otemachi and 神田 Kanda.
Opened in 2018.
It is about 7 meters wide and 120 m long. The name refers to this old area of Edo, 竜閑（龍閑) Ryukan. A street between Nihonbashi and Kanda near Imagawabashi is where a man-made river called Ryukangawa once flowed.
It was dug out to serve as a fire break and also used to ferry supplies by boat, but was filled in after the war once distribution had shifted to transportation by car.

Ryukangawa 竜閑川 River Ryukangawa

After 明暦の大火 the great fire of Meireki in 1657, many flat areas were provided to serve as shelters for fire prevention.
Canals were also built, for example the 神田八丁堀 Kanda Hachobori, later called 白銀町堀 Shiroganemachi-bori and then Ryukangawa.
In 1857, the river was filled in. In 1883 it was dug up again to provide a water transportation route for the growing population.
In 1948, it was filled in again with the rubble of the city after World War II.
In 1950 the filling was complete and the river disappeared.

Ryukancho 龍閑町 Ryūkanchō district
It was established around 1600 and abolished in 1869.
Now 千代田区内神田二・三丁目 Chiyoda ward, Uchi-Kanda, second and third sub-district
Named after 井上龍閑 Inoue Ryukan from 駿府 Sunpu, who founded the town around 1600.
Ryukan is also written 立閑.
The father of Ryukan, 井上新左衛門 Inoue Shinzaemon, lived on the Northern side of 竜閑川 river Ryukangawa.
Ryukan was the son-in-law of 大老酒井讃岐守忠勝 and was the head of the accounting department. Since he did illegal things, he was executed.

The land between the bridge 和泉橋 Izumibashi over 神田川 the river Kandagawa and 美倉橋 the bridge (former 新シ橋 Atarashibashi) along 柳原土手 the riverbank Yanagihara were special daichi 代地 government areas, called 龍閑町代地 Ryukan cho daichi.
In 1869, the 代地 Daichi was merged with 鎌倉横町北側代地 Kamakura Yokocho Kitagawa Daichi

In 1872, the local people often called it 元誓願寺前 area around temple Seigan-Ji.

The wife of 河野通直 Kano Michinao (1564 - 1587), Lord of 伊予国 Io no Kuni, was bewitched and became two women. Nobody knew who was the real one. While eating her ears would begin to move, so they torured her to find out. And indeed, an old fox appeared in her place. When they tried to kill it. all the foxes from the Shikoku region came along.
They said this fox was the messenger 貴狐明神 of 稲荷 Inari and the master of all foxes in Japan. If they would not kill her, the foxes would leave Shikoku and do no more harm.
Michinao believed them and let the fox go. All the other foxes also left Shikoku.

The father of 藤田スイ氏 Fujita Sui, 藤原金次郎 Fujiwara Kinjiro, was nuimono no shishoo 縫物の師匠 a famous craftsman for sewing. He went with two companions to トウドウさん／東堂山 Mount Todo San (668 m) and on their way home they took chikamichi 近道 a shortcut. They were wearing fashionable scarlet coats. On the way they sat down to have a smoke.
They saw a kitsunebi 狐火 fox fire appearing and disappearing, coming and going. They looked at it for a a while with enjoyment and then went home.
The family members told them they were smelling of shit. Their scarlet coats were full of fox shit.

Founded in 807, people came here to pray for prosperity and protection of their farm animals.

Late one evening two people came to the temple. The priest (師匠) told them they need not tell him anything, he knew already that two people had committed suicide by hanging.

Female fortune tellers are called Waka Sama.
When 夏井 Natsui is taking over a woman in a session, she might jump up quite a bit when this happens.
Then she would turn toward the mentor and say:
"I am the protector deity of this place. I am コンピラサマ Konpira Sama. If you want to ask somethins, go ahead!"
Questions about something lost or a lost person would especially lead to a good result.

The horse statue made by a master craftsman from Hida at 一ノ宮 the Shrine Ichi no Miya ran away every night and devastated the fields.
So they crushed its eyes to keep it in its place.

At the entrance to the home of 長谷家 the Hasegawa family there was a carving of a dragon made by a craftsman from Hida.
At night the dragon would fly away to the near fountain, take a bath and make steam float in the air.

Norikoshi is almost like a kagebooshi 影法師 Kageboshi, the full shadow of a person.
First the bold head of a priest becomes visible. Because it is not clear, people look closer. and it becomes bigger and biger, going over a roof. Then it comes down down again.
In the village 土淵村 Tsuchibuchi mura there lived kajiya 鍛冶屋 a blacksmith named 権蔵 Gonzo. One evening he came back to the house of his shishoo 師匠 teacher when he saw a man peeking at the daughter. He seemed huge like a rock and then shrinking rapidly. He soon jumped over the roof and disappeared.

Toogoro kitsune 藤五郎狐 a fox named Togoro
On the border along 桃生村 Momou village and 中津山村 Nakatsuyama village there is a bridge over the river 古川 Furukawa called the 八景橋 Hakkeibashi. Around there lived an old fox called 藤五郎 Togoro. The used to bewitch travelers. Once shishimai no takumi 獅子舞の師匠 a mentor of the lion dance from Nakatsuyama village named 勘作 Kansaku with his troupe was invited to a village in Nagano and had to cross this bridge. It was evening already and there was a large estate inviting them to stay. They danced all night and got a lot of presents for it. The next morning when they came to 谷地 Yachi near the bridge, they found that all their presents had gone.
This was the wicked deed of the fox Togoro.

In the middle of 神野山 Mount Konoyama there was koedame 肥溜め an area for fertilizer. A student of 狂言 Kyogen passed here one night and was bewitched by a fox. He undressed and went into the dump all nakes, thinking a peace of shit was soap and smeared it all over his body. Other people passing by begun to laugh and he finally came back to his senses.

In Nanba lives a strange man who worked in the fields. He would get half naked, show his stomach and if someone shot at him, he was never hit.
Once a group of skilled hunters with their 師匠 master and asked the master to shoot at the man. The master hit the target and the man died. When the students asked how he did it, he said this man was in fact a fox and he had shot at the robes the fox in disguise was wearing.
Later they found the fox, who was shot dead.

Near 見付 Mitsuke there is a pond called Sakuragaike 桜が池 "The Cherry Blossom Pond".
皇円 Saint Koen (1074 - 1169), the mentor of 法然 Saint Honen, meditated here waiting for 弥勒 Miroku Bosatsu to come back the earth, trying to become a serpent that would never die. When he was about to die, he jumped into the pond and became a serpent.
