Kawase Hasui 川瀬巴水 (1883 - 1957)
- quote
He was one of the most prominent print designers of the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement.
..... Style
Kawase worked almost exclusively on landscape and townscape prints based on sketches he made in Tokyo and during travels around Japan. However, his prints are not merely meishō (famous places) prints that are typical of earlier ukiyo-e masters such as Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). Kawase's prints feature locales that are tranquil and obscure in urbanizing Japan.
Hasui
considered himself a realist and employed his training in Western painting in his compositions. Like Hiroshige he made travel and landscape prints, though his subjects were less known locations rendered with naturalistic light, shade, and texture, without the captions and titles that were standard in prints of Hiroshige's age.
Kawase
left a large body of woodblock prints and watercolors. Many of the watercolors are linked to the woodblock prints, he also produced oil paintings, traditional hanging scrolls and a few byōbu (folding screens).
In the West,
Kawase is mainly known as a Japanese woodblock printmaker. He and Hiroshi Yoshida are widely regarded as two of the greatest artists of the shin-hanga style, and are known especially for their landscape prints.

At 青物町 Aomonocho there lived a former Sumo wrestler, he now dealt with horses (bakuroo バクロウ). Once he went to the river with a horse, where he met a Kappa. The Kappa wanted to pull the horse into the water, but the strong Nanatsutaki pulled him out with ease. The Kappa apologized and promised never to pull humans into the water again.
He promised to stay off from 明神淵 Myojin-Fuchi to 御舟小屋 Ofune-Koya. And all other Kappa would also respect this promise.
Since this day, no fatal water accidents happened there and people now bring offerings to the local shrine festival

Motosukiya district Sukiyabashi Chuo
[ . BACK to DARUMA MUSEUM TOP . ]
. Famous Places and Powerspots of Edo 江戸の名所 .
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Motosukiyachoo Moto-Sukiya cho 元数奇屋町 Moto-Sukiya district, Chuo ward
Chuo ward 中央区 銀座 五丁目 Ginza 5th district
"Former Sukiya district" - 元数寄屋町 (奇 different Chinese character)
sukiya 数奇屋 originally means "tea ceremony room", see below.
The original bridge 数奇屋橋 Sukiyabashi of the Edo period is now lost. At the Sotobori outer moat of Edo castle there was a gate called
Sukiyabashi gomon 数寄屋橋御門 Sukiyabashi Gate.
The bridge had been built in 1629 and in the following year the gate was finished.
The area South-east of the gate was called 元数奇屋町 Moto-Sukiya district.
Since 1625, homes of the townspeople were built in this district, from the first to the fourth sub-district.
The name of the area refers to the living quarters of many sukiya boozu 数奇屋坊主 Sukiya Bozu "monk tea masters".
There were about 50 of them, serving tea in Edo castle and placed under the jurisdiction of the Bakufu Government Wakadoshiyori 若年寄 junior counselor.
The Chabozu served the Shogun and his harem, and also the many Daimyo lords. Some had a great influence over their master and there are Kabuki plays about them.
The most famous was
. Oda Urakusai Nagamasu 織田有楽斎長益 . (1547 - 1621)
The district Yūrakuchō 有楽町 Yurakucho is named after him.
He was the younger brother of Oda Nobunaga. Nagamasu built his mansion here on land near the Sukiya-bashi Gate of Edo Castle granted by Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Around 1700 there was a fire and all burned down. Later kimono dealers settled here from the district near 呉服橋 Gofukubashi bridge, so the area was re-named
MOTO 元 "former"
Now there is also the
Sukiyabashi Kooen 数寄屋橋公園 Sukiyabashi Park, in the area called Yurakucho.
In 1878, the district belonged to 京橋区 Kyobashi ward. Now Chuo ward.

This photo was taken at Shirobe landing around 1870. It shows four of the large wagons known as daihachiguruma. The waterway in the background is the Imperial Palace (formerly Edo Castle) moat, around the Sukiyabashi area.
Behind the house is a boat, and since this spot was a landing point, cargo had probably been transferred
from the boat to the wagons.

sukiya 数寄屋
A tea ceremony room *chashitsu 茶室, distinguish from a genuine tea ceremony house, and points to buildings in the tea house style, or buildings in sukiya style *sukiya-zukuri 数奇屋造, or include both, and call them sukiya. However, the distinctions are not clear.
Historically, sukiya zashiki 数寄屋座敷, in BUNRUI SOUJINBOKU 分類草人木 (1564), could be seen as an early example. A tea ceremony room was usually called *zashiki 座敷 or referred to by the number of its mats. Heinouchi Yoshimasa 平内吉政 and his son Masanobu 政信 (?-1645) famous carpenters in the Edo period state in their secret book *SHOUMEI 匠明 (1608), that calling a tea ceremony room a sukiya began around the time when the mansion Jurakudai 聚楽第 was being built for Toyotomi Hideyoshi 豊臣秀吉 (1536-98) in 1587.
The use of the word sukiya is thought to have originated by Soueki 宗易 (Soeki, Sen Rikyuu 千利休; 1522-91) in Sakai 堺.
Nevertheless, it is certain that the name sukiya was used by Sen Rikyuu in place of zashiki or *kozashiki 小座敷 (small room), or enclosure *kakoi 囲, within a large room.
During Keichou 慶長 era (1596-1615), the use of the term sukiya became popular. Especially, used at Furuta Oribe 古田織部 (1544-1615) and Kobori Enshuu's 小堀遠州 (1579-1647) tea ceremony, it seems it was a custom to call a small room a sukiya in contrast to larger rooms *shoin 書院 or *kusari-no-ma 鎖の間. The Sen Family, Senke 千家 was critical of this trend, and Rikyuu's great grandson Koushin Sousa 江岑宗左 (1613-72) stated that ;
To call a tea ceremony room sukiya is offensive to hear, so it should be called kozashiki, as in the past. We avoid saying sukiya.
Thus, around this time, an effort was made to distinguish kakoi from sukiya. The CHAFU 茶譜 says ;
The word sukiya was not used in the Rikyuu style, and the tea room was called kozashiki. Kozashiki is a separate building that guests enter through a small door, kuguri くぐり from the tea garden *roji 露地. An enclosure kakoi means an enclosure that has sliding paper doors *fusuma 襖, which were placed in a shoin room to enclose a special area for fixing tea.
This was accomplished by using partitions. There was an alcove, a small entrance, a middle post, a push up window, a back door way *katteguchi 勝手口 and owner's entrance *kayoiguchi 通い口. Further, the CHAFU states that sukiya and kozashiki were built independently in tea gardens.
Examples: Nishihonganji Kuroshoin 西本願寺黒書院 (late 16c), Manshuin Koshoin 曼珠院小書院 (mid-17c), all tea houses at Katsura Rikyuu 桂離宮 (mid-17c), all in Kyoto.

During Keichou 慶長 era (1596-1615), the use of the term sukiya became popular. Especially, used at Furuta Oribe 古田織部 (1544-1615) and Kobori Enshuu's 小堀遠州 (1579-1647) tea ceremony, it seems it was a custom to call a small room a sukiya in contrast to larger rooms *shoin 書院 or *kusari-no-ma 鎖の間. The Sen Family, Senke 千家 was critical of this trend, and Rikyuu's great grandson Koushin Sousa 江岑宗左 (1613-72) stated that ;
To call a tea ceremony room sukiya is offensive to hear, so it should be called kozashiki, as in the past. We avoid saying sukiya.
Thus, around this time, an effort was made to distinguish kakoi from sukiya. The CHAFU 茶譜 says ;

Horiechoo, Horie choo 堀江町 Horie Cho district
Kobunachoo 小舟町 Kobunacho, Kobuna Cho district ("small boat")
Located in the South of 江戸川区南部 Edogwa district, 葛西地域 Kasai area.
The name has been used until 1932 and later (1979) became part of the Kasai area.
When Tokugawa Ieyasu came to Edo, there a lot of fishermen in this are, one of them was
Horie Rokuroo 堀江六郎 Horie Rokuro.
Ieyasu allowed him to use his name for the area and provide fish and seafood for the fast-growing city.
It is a narrow long district, next to 小舟町 Kobunacho, sandwiched between two waterways.
In the East is 東堀留川 Higashi-Horidomegawa , in the West 伊勢町川 Isechogawa. (These waterways do not exist any more.)
. 伊勢町 Isecho, Ise district .
with Shiokashi 塩河岸 "Salt river bank" and Komekashi 米河岸 "Rice river bank".
Because of this good access by boat, there were many storehouses. They stored
Edo Meisho Zue 江戸名所図会
There were also many craftsmen and dealers for uchiwa 団扇 hand fans (the air-conditioning for summer in Edo).
So Horie was soon identified with the hand fans.
Two districts in the middle of Horie were also called
Terefurechoo 照降町 (てれふれ) Terefurecho, Terefure Cho
(district where it rains (fure) and shines (tere))
The Japanese is also given as (てりふりちょう ) Terifuricho.
since they made umbrellas, raincoats and hand fans, useful items for any weather and the roads were always busy with customers.
The haiku poet Takarai Kikaku 宝井其角 and Hattori Ransetsu 服部嵐雪 also lived in the back quarters of てれふれ町足駄屋 a Geta shop in Terefure Cho.

Kobunachoo 小舟町 Kobunacho, Kobuna Cho district ("small boat")
The district had three sub-districts, 一丁目 till 三丁目.
At the time of the urban demarcations applied in 1603, this area was known as. Shimofunecho. However, in 1720, its name was changed to Kobunacho to distinguish it from 大舟町 Obunacho, which lay to the west.
(Ofunacho was eventually re-named to 本舟町 Hon-Funacho "the Real Funacho".)
It was a district with fishermen and shipping agents.
Traces of the old capital of Edo still linger in Kobuna-cho, Nihonbashi.
It was connected via the waterways to the bridges Edobashi and Nihonbashi.
小伝馬町→小舟町天王 Tenno Festival Float from Kobunacho - Kodenmacho
Around 1711 there was an epidemy in Kobunacho and they might have borowed the float from the Tenno Shrine for the festifal 天王おまつり.
It seems the festival float was carried around parts along Nihonbashi and Uogashi, where the fish mongers lived and sometimes called
sanjuri Tenno 十三里天王 Tenno of 30 ri distance
(1 里 RI is about 3.9 km).

Looking after the giant lantern dedicated to Sensoji Temple in Asakusa is one way of carrying on tradition. Sensoji Temple has a giant lantern at Kaminarimon Gate and at Hozomon Gate, but the giant lantern hung at Hozomon Gate dedicated by Nihonbashi Kobunacho has a longer history.
It is said that religious followers from around the waters by the fish market at Nihonbashi dedicated it in 1657 as a sign of their faith. By the way, the dedicating of the giant lantern at Kaminarimon Gate was started by the “god of management” Konosuke Matsushita; founder of the leading Japanese home appliance manufacturer Panasonic, and the company continues to look after it to this day.
The giant lantern is 3.9 meters in height. It is also 2.7 meters in circumference so it takes two fully-grown adults to encircle it hand-in-hand. A new one will be dedicated this year for the first time in eleven years. It will cost five to six million yen as Kyoto is the only place where a lantern this size can be made. It will be unveiled at a festival at Yakumo Shrine in September with help from the townspeople, companies, and those who have a fondness for Nihonbashi Kobunacho. It is then scheduled to be dedicated to Sensoji Temple on October 5.
...
Nihonbashi Kobunacho in the 1950’s, it was still quite reminiscent of the “bonito riverbank” during the Edo period. As its name suggests, the area was lined with dried bonito*1 wholesalers and in the daytime, you could see mats everywhere with bonito on them being dried under the sun. When aged bonito is scraped with a brush, you could see powder flying everywhere, spreading the smell of dried bonito.
Nihonbashi Kobunacho is where Zenjiro Yasuda, founder of one of Japan’s megabanks, Mizuho Financial Group, started his dried bonito wholesaling / money changing business.
There is a legend stating that he started it when he found a golden Ebisu (god of fishing and fortune) statue. The Kobunacho Branch of Mizuho Bank currently stands where Zenjiro set up his business and its staff helps us out every year during festivities such as a kagami-biraki ceremony in January. The placing of importance on connections with the area not only by its residence but also by companies based here is another fine tradition of Nihonbashi.

Kyobashi - Home of Edo's Craftsmen
The Tokaido is the main highway between Edo and Western Japan. Here in the downtown area of the city, though, it looks like just one more busy city street. As we get closer to the center of town, the streets which cross the Tokaido become broader and the buildings that line the streets become larger and more imposing. Most of the buildings on the main roads are large stores or the homes some of the city's more prosperous merchants. Kyobashi is the general name given to a large area of low-lying land that makes up one of the key commercial districts of Edo. The district occupies the flat land immediately to the West of Edo castle, and is an important center of the city's economy.
However, the reason why Kyobashi is such an important part of Edo's economy is that many communities of craftsmen and artisans live in the area. The people who practice each type of craft tend to gather together in certain neighborhoods, and for this reason, many neighborhoods in the Kyobashi area are named after the type of craftsmen who live there.
A few examples are:
Tatami-machi -- Mat-maker's village
Oke-machi -- Bucket-maker's village
Minami Daiku-machi -- South carpenter's village
Minami Kaji-machi -- South blacksmith's village

Komagata-do,
dedicated to the horse-headed guardian deity of mounted travelers, one of the many manifestations of the bodhisattva Kannon, marks the original gateway to Senso-ji, standing formerly on the threshold of the land and waters from where Kannon is said to have emerged in the ancient past. Because of this legend, the hall was originally facing the river, and fishing was forbidden as a mark of respect.

The main deity was Kannon Bosatsu, a statue which was found near the 駒形橋 Komagata bridge.
The hall is near Komagata Bridge beside the 隅田川 Sumidagawa river. It was the first hall for the Kannon statue, which is now in the main temple of Asakusa,
The first Komagata Do Hall was built in 942 by 平公雅 Taira no Kimimasa, right next to the boat landing place at the river. So visitors first came to the Komagata Do Hall to pray and then went to the Asakusa Kannon temple. The front of the temple was first located facing the river, but eventually it was rebuilt to show the back to the river. The present-day hall was built in 2003.
One priest of the Asakusa Kannon temple, 網野宥俊僧正, knew that the original place of the statue was in the Sumidagawa, so the Kannon must like fresh things from the water and thus he installed Bato Kannon 馬頭観音 the Horse-headed Kannon in the hall. For the people to pray to, he had the statue made like a horse (umagata 馬形), later written 駒形.

deities Komagatane Gongen 駒形根権現 and Ontake Gongen 御嶽権現
The deities from the mountains of 駒形根 Komagatane and 御嶽 Ontake came down to meet in 陸奥 Mutsu, near 築館 Tsukidate. Near the river 一迫川 Ichihasamagawa they found beautiful flowers in bloom and named the mountain 花山 Hanayama "Mountain with Flowers".
On the way back the Kami from Ontake became sleepy, but the Kami from Komagatane kept going and pursued the way with the most beautiful landscape. This is now mount 御駒山 Okomayama.
The Kami from Ontake came later and took another route. This is now 御嶽権現の山 the mountain of Ontake Gongen, where beautiful shakunage 石楠花 rhododendron are flowering.
Komagatane Gongen became jealous and wanted some flowers too, but since he had left Ontake behind earlier on, he did not get any.
To our day, these rhododendron flower only at mount 御嶽山 Ontakesan and not on mount 駒形山 Komagatayama.

"Dozyo(Loach fish)" is one of the regional menus eaten by locals since Edo era (17th Century~). At those times there used to be shops selling "Dozyo-jiru", a dish of rice bowl with dozyo soup poured on. We can say that it was one typical fast food back then.

The footsteps of the horse are still seen on the rock and the region was called Komagata.

deities Komagatane Gongen 駒形根権現 and Ontake Gongen 御嶽権現
